Brazil updates technical requirements for household electrical appliances

On 1 April 2026, Brazil’s National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality (INMETRO/CONMETRO) published a rectification notice to Portaria No. 148/2022, introducing corrections to technical descriptions, scope definitions, and equipment listings related to household and similar electrical appliances.The amendment includes several important updates to the conformity assessment requirements.

 

Technical Testing – Disruptive Discharge

  • Subitem 3.2.1 retains the standard disruptive discharge limit of 5 mA, with the allowable limit increased to 30 mA for appliances with high leakage current.
  • The notice further specifies that “appliances with high leakage current” refer to stationary Class I motor-operated or heating appliances.

 

Scope and Equipment Categories (Annex III)

The rectification also clarifies that the appliance list provided in Table 1 is intended as an illustrative, non-exhaustive list.

 

Commercial Cooking Equipment (Item 25)

  • Ovens have now been expressly included within the scope.
  • Commercial electric ovens with rated power above 20 kW are additionally included among the specified appliances.

 

Steam and Convection Equipment (Item 30)

  • The description has been expanded to cover forced-convection electric ovens and combi ovens.
  • Commercial combi ovens and forced-convection ovens with rated power exceeding 20 kW have also been specifically added.

 

High-Pressure Cleaners (Item 61)

  • The maximum nominal pressure limit has been revised from 25 MPa to 35 MPa.
  • The scope now includes equipment powered by battery-operated, internal combustion, hydraulic, and pneumatic motors.
  • The application scope has also been clarified to cover both domestic and commercial use.

 

The rectification took effect on 1 April 2026.
