Providing overall services to ensure electric vehicle safety

What does electric vehicle safety really mean?

As with any other vehicle, safety is a top priority in the development of electric cars. With the widespread use of electric vehicles and the deployment of electric drive trains the development and validation processes in the automotive industry have changed fundamentally. In the past, single system / component safety was widely sufficient for overall safety, whereas requirements in the EV battery / fuel cell electric vehicle were more interconnected. Combined with control units and permanent monitoring devices, intelligent software solutions have taken over a significant portion of the overall safety and security of vehicles. They are subjected to various testing services and must also comply with global standards specific to e-mobility products.

Why is safety so important within the e-mobility ecosystem?

Electric vehicle safety is particularly important as there are a few different factors that can affect the performance and safety of e-mobility products. The Detailed view of a vehicle being charged in an EV station.benefits of conducting different types of safety tests and assessments are extensive, and include:

  • Ensure safety of your e-mobility products like automotive batteries and electronics by proving compliance to global standards and legislation.
  • Demonstrate that your products consistently meet the highest levels of quality.
  • Bring your electric vehicle products to global markets without delays, thereby and avoid costly recalls and save time and money.
  • Ensure your customers trust in the safety of your products.

Functional safety of connected vehicles

To ensure the functional safety of your e-mobility vehicles we provide various services according to ISO 26262 to evaluate the safety of your vehicle’s electrical and electronic components. In addition, we provide Safety Of The Intended Functionality (SOTIF) training and assessment.

Passive safety

This type of safety refers to vehicle components that contribute to the protection of vehicle occupants in the event of an accident, and includes seat belts, airbags and the vehicle structure. These components are common to both conventional and electric vehicles. To test these safety systems, several tests are carried out, including frontal crash, side impact and roof strength tests.

Active safety

This section includes the set of safety systems that prevent an accident from occurring. These active EV safety systems include anti-lock brakes, traction control systems and electronic stability programmes. These systems depend to a greater extent on sensors and algorithms and are common in both electric and conventional vehicles.

Cybersecurity of connected vehicles

As today's modern vehicles integrate ADAS functions and communication interfaces, they become more and more connected, and the danger of potential cyber-attacks increases. This is especially true for electric vehicles, as they operate in a fully connected manner with different networks and protocols that need to be protected. We support you to improve electric vehicle safety with our cybersecurity assessment for automotive components, for connected and automated vehicles, cybersecurity management systems and software updates according to the latest international standards.
