How TÜV SÜD can help with EV charger inspections
Electric vehicle charging stations are repeatedly used by many drivers and are often installed in areas where they might be exposed to climatic influences. Being exposed to climatic factors, these charging stations have a high chance of getting damaged. Over time, the components in the charging stations may reach the end of their service life and connections may loosen or corrode.
The wear and tear of your charging stations will increase the risks of electrical hazards, which might result in fire or electric shock. Periodic inspection after installation is recommended to ensure that your charging stations are in good condition and safe for usage.
TÜV SÜD testing and product certification services conform to stringent quality requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO/IEC 17065. We provide internationally accredited independent conformity assessment in accordance with TR25 and SS 722 requirements for periodic inspection of EVCS. The service can simulate vehicle signals, communication protocols and load circuits on-site.
TÜV SÜD conducts periodic tests and inspections for EVCS. In addition to the TR 25 checklist, an on-site test report will be provided for companies to better understand the charger’s performance through the data and waveform presented. We also provide an option to apply for the TÜV Mark on the EV charger after successfully completing the test. By affixing the TÜV Mark, it adds confidence and assurance to users when using the EVCS.
Singapore EV charger inspection requirements
Governing bodies in different countries have different requirements for the installation and maintenance of electric vehicle charging stations.
In Singapore, Technical Reference 25 (TR 25) was established in 2010 to provide technical safety requirements for electric vehicle charging systems (EVCS).
To support the continued expansion of Singapore's electric vehicle charging network and the adoption of emerging charging technologies, TR 25:2022 was elevated to Singapore Standard SS 722 with effect from 1 April 2026. The standard includes updated specifications and guidelines for the design, installation, maintenance, and operation of EV charging systems in Singapore to enhance their safety and reliability.
For the installation of EV chargers, companies must engage a Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) and an equipment specialist to install, test, and certify the fitness of the EVCS installation before it is placed into service.
The owner is responsible for the safe use and operation of the EVCS. Regular maintenance, electrical safety inspection, and testing should be carried out in accordance with TR 25:2022 and/or SS 722. Inspection records must be retained for at least two years and produced to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) when required.

Frequently asked questions
How frequently should EV charging stations undergo periodic inspections?
Although the frequency of EV charging station inspections can vary depending on usage and environmental factors, EV charging stations must undergo annual periodic inspections and testing.
In Singapore under TR 25:2022 and SS 722, EV chargers for public use must be inspected by an equipment specialist once every six months and annually by a skilled person. It is recommended that EV chargers for private use be inspected by an equipment specialist once every 24 months.
What components of an EV charging system are inspected periodically?
- Electrical components, including cables, connectors, circuit breakers, transformers, and other electrical infrastructure, are checked for wear, damage, or overheating.
- Grounding and bonding connections are checked for security and compliance with safety requirements.
- Communication systems are checked to confirm that protocols between the charger, user interface, and management systems operate correctly.
- Physical integrity is checked for damage to the station housing, cables, and other hardware.
- Software and firmware are checked to confirm that they are current and operating as intended.
Detailed periodic-inspection tests listed under TR 25:2022
- Document review, including type approval and the operational manual
- External environmental inspection
- Pilot-control resistance measurement
- Functionality test
- Start–stop charging-sequence test under normal conditions
- Abnormal shock-circuit simulation test
- Residual current protective device (RCCD) tripping test
- Earth-loop impedance test
- Insulation-resistance test
Can TÜV SÜD assist with compliance documentation and reporting after inspection?
TÜV SÜD can assist with compliance documentation and reporting after an EV charger inspection. We provide internationally accredited independent conformity assessment under TR 25 and SS 722 requirements for periodic inspection of EVCS using an EV charger tester measurement devices and diagnostics equipment. We also present the on-site test report which helps companies better understand the charger's performance.
For EV chargers that comply with the TR25 requirements TÜV SÜD can issue a TUV Mark after periodic inspection for affixing on the charger giving users and operators additional assurance.
What common issues are found during EV charger periodic inspections?
During EV charger periodic inspections common problems identified include:
- Defective connections
- Incorrect installation
- Improper earthing
- Hardware flaws
- Long-term wear and tear
The components in the charging stations may reach the end of their lifecycle and connections may loosen or corrode over time.
