E-mark certification

We help you to ensure that your vehicle systems or automotive components comply with the relevant UN (formerly ECE) Regulations to receive UN.
ECE Vehicle Certification

What is the E-mark certification for gaining EU type approval?

All new vehicles sold in EU must be approved according to EU legislation and therefore must carry the E-mark. The E-mark shows that vehicles comply with relevant EU and UN regulations, allowing automotive distributors and manufacturers to trade their products freely within the EU and some other neighbouring countries.

TÜV SÜD’s E-mark certification services assist manufacturers at every stage of the homologation process.

How TÜV SÜD can help you achieve your E-mark certification

TÜV SÜD is your global partner for selling vehicles and components in the EU with confidence. We help you meet the relevant EU directives and ensure that your products receive E-mark certification.

Our local experts provide type approval and homologation services for the various vehicle categories defined in the EU. This includes passenger cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, and vehicles that are derived from motorcycles, trailers, as well as agricultural and forestry vehicles. We also provide homologation services for a comprehensive range of automotive systems (e.g. heating, or antitheft systems) and components (e.g. coupling devices, brakes, lamps or tyres).

Our global network of testing facilities and homologation experts offer a comprehensive range of E-mark certification services in accordance with the following EU framework regulations:

  • Regulation (EU) 2018/858 (former Directive 2007/46/EC)
  • Regulation (EU) 167/2013
  • Regulation (EU) 168/2013

For self-propelled working machinery that is not covered by these vehicle categories, we are appointed by the German and other governments for national type approval testing. We are also appointed by the German type approval authority “Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA)” and by many other various authorities to carry out conformity of production (CoP) clearance testing and inspection. Particularly for manufacturers outside of the EU, this helps reduce the costs of homologation.

The E-mark certification process

The EU/ECE certificate can be complex. Working with TÜV SÜD gives you support at every step and ensures that nothing is missed.

Obtaining the E-mark involves a comprehensive assessment of your product’s performance, as well as a thorough appraisal of the testing facility. Once all technical documentation and the test report is completed, and conformity of production clearance has been granted, applicants will be issued with an EU type approval certificate. Manufacturers can then affix the EU type approval E-mark to their compliant components and issue certificates of conformity (CoC) for vehicles using them.

What our E-mark certification services for EU type approval include

Our EU type approval services support manufacturers throughout the entire homologation process. This includes:

  • Homologation projects quoting
  • Advising of the most appropriate testing approval route (in case there are several options)
  • Selecting test specimens
  • Preparing the required documentation (information folder)
  • Advising on legislation changes and/or required approval updates

TÜV SÜD also provides multi regulation management services to minimise time and optimise investment. So that you can achieve multiple certifications within a single project, we identify the overlaps and evolving requirements of different regulations.
