USA: Bisphenol S is added to California proposition 65 list

JANUARY 2024 - ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS, HARDLINES, SOFTLINES, TOYS AND CHILDREN'S PRODUCTS

The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) added Bisphenol S1 (BPS) to the Proposition 65 list2 as a reproductive toxicant (female reproductive endpoint) on 29 December 2023. The warning requirement for significant exposures to BPS will take effect one year later.

Bisphenol S belongs to the family of bisphenols, and it is used as a monomer in synthetic polymers such as polyethersulfone (PES), polysulfone (PSU), as a synthetic tanning agent for leather, and in synthetic fibres for clothing and other textiles. In particular, BPS is an analog of Bisphenol A3, both chemically and functionally. Some manufacturers have replaced BPA with BPS.

In the recent settlement regarding BPA in socks4 made of polyester with spandex, the reformulation required that BPA cannot be replaced by any other bisphenols such as BPS even though BPS was not yet been added to the Proposition 65 list at that time.
