Case Study: Hydrogen Electrolyzer Compliance

The Challenge

The company developed a new electrolyzer which produces hydrogen by using electricity to separate hydrogen molecules from oxygen molecules in water. The company wanted to ensure that it could sell the product legally in North America and wanted to identify the proper standards and certifications necessary to do so.

The Solution

TÜV SÜD conducted a pre-compliance assessment to help the manufacturer determine the proper standards and a path to certification. Our team analyzed critical documentation including:

Electrical safety diagrams

Construction diagrams

Manuals

Electrical component lists

Product data sheets, and more

TÜV SÜD also consulted Authority Holding Jurisdictions (AHJs) to determine state and local requirements that apply.

The Results

TÜV SÜD delivered a detailed compliance readiness report explaining all the market requirements for their product. Our team held multiple explanatory meetings to personally discuss our findings and answer any questions. TÜV SÜD delivered a detailed compliance readiness document outlining the requirements according to CSA/ANSI B22734, which is the US/CAN harmonized version of ISO 22734. Our findings indicated that there were several gaps between what was reviewed and what the standard calls out. These findings were communicated and explained to the client in our various team discussions.

Next Steps

TÜV SÜD is now handling electrical and hydrogen certification for the manufacturer. Our teams will go on site to physically test the product and work on final project documentation. We will issue a test report and issue a certificate when the company fulfills requirements outlined by the applicable standards.

The process will make the certification process smooth and streamlined, leading to a seamless transition to bringing the product to market.
