Ensure Reliable Nuclear Quality Management with ISO 19443

Learn how ISO 19443 certification ensures safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Date: 19 Dec 2025

The nuclear sector mandates strict safety regulations throughout its supply chain to ensure the protection of workers, the public, and the environment. For companies operating in this highly regulated industry and providing safety-related equipment, systems, or services to operators, it is essential to understand the requirements for quality management systems.

Understanding ISO 19443

ISO 19443 is a nuclear-specific quality management standard designed specifically for organizations in the nuclear energy sector providing products and services important to nuclear safety (ITNS). It builds upon the principles of ISO 9001:2015, adding requirements specific to the nuclear sector with the aim to standardize requirements and ensure global consistency, quality and safety throughout the nuclear supply chain.

This standard enables organizations to demonstrate their ability to consistently provide products and services important to nuclear safety that meet customer and regulatory requirements. Organizations are also able to enhance customer satisfaction through effective systematic processes and continuous improvement. This approach minimizes risks and uncertainties and supports global safety and quality standards, within the nuclear industry worldwide.

What are the benefits of ISO 19443 for your company?

The implementation of ISO 19443 enables organizations to harmonize requirements, gaining access to the international nuclear supply chain market. This enhances the relationship between licensee and supplier and streamlines regulatory compliance. Following the standard offers several benefits, including:

  1. Enhanced Quality and Safety: Ensures that management systems and their related processes meet nuclear safety and quality assurance requirements, reducing risks associated with nuclear operations.
  2. Risk Management: Helps organizations identify and address risks and opportunities, enhancing overall operational resilience. Allows the determination of ITNS (important to nuclear safety) items or activities.
  3. Supply Chain Efficiency: Standardizes processes across the supply chain, reducing integration time and costs, simplifying the selection of suppliers and minimizing uncertainties.
  4. Regulatory Acceptance: Demonstrates conformity to international quality management standards, which can facilitate regulatory approvals and market access.
  5. Traceability and verification: Helps with the understanding of counterfeit, fraudulent and suspect items. Ensures that all relevant information is documented.
  6. Continuous Improvement: Encourages a culture of continuous improvement and safety within the organization.
  7. Customer Satisfaction: By adhering to ISO 19443, organizations enhance customer satisfaction through effective application of quality management and safety principles.

How to get certified for ISO 19443?

A complete ISO 19443 audit cycle takes three years and begins with the initial certification audit. Surveillance audits take place in the second and third year. The duration of the audits is defined by ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015 and ISO/TS 23406:2020.

Before the certification audit, an optional preaudit can be requested. During this preaudit, the certification body will become acquainted with the company and assist in identifying any nonconformities that must be addressed before obtaining certification.

If you partner with TÜV SÜD for your certification process, we provide an audit team that has extensive experience and deep understanding of quality and safety in the nuclear energy sector in combination with the audit experience of quality management systems. This ensures a reliable audit and certification process. Furthermore, you can obtain ISO 19443 and ISO 9001 certification with a single audit process with no additional costs or efforts.
