Food Safety Management System
The SS 590:2013 is a HACCP based locally recognized and accredited food safety management system in Singapore. It was published to replace and upgrade the previous Singapore Accreditation Council (SAC) HACCP Document No. 2 – Management of Food Safety based on HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) – Requirements for a HACCP-based Food Management System. All CBs were asked by SAC to migrate certifications under SAC HACCP Document No. 2 to SS 590 by 10 January 2016.
Maintaining high food safety and quality standards is critical for protecting human health. SS 590 is a generic standard that lays the framework and requirements for food safety management system. SS 590:2013 is applicable to food and beverage producing, processing, packaging, sourcing, preserving, distributing, transportation, supplying or selling organisations. It also covers food manufacturers, hotels’ kitchen, restaurants, caterers, food distribution companies, food retail etc. They will have to implement, change, integrate or enhance their existing management system to meet SS 590:2013 requirements.
Though an HACCP based standard, SS 590 has been drafted as a modified adoption of the FSMS standard ISO 22000. Hence, implementing SS 590 will lay the foundation for the implementation of ISO 22000 standard in future.
