ISO 9001:2015 is expected to be replaced by a new version in 2026

The current version of the standard is ISO 9001:2015. However, ISO is working intensively to revise ISO 9001, aligning the standard with newer legal requirements and ensuring that it reflects the evolving needs of organisations and the global economy more accurately.
Due to the extensive feedback from stakeholders on the first draft – the so-called Committee Draft – and the need for further discussion, a standard revision by the Working Group became necessary. ISO 9001 is therefore expected to come into force in 2026. The anticipated changes are intended to improve compatibility with other standards, and climate protection is also set to play a greater role.

A general introduction to ISO 9001

What is ISO 9001 certification?

An organisation that complies with the ISO 9001 QMS standard proves its commitment to quality control. Having an ISO 9001 certification means that a product has been developed with stringent quality control measures followed.

Is ISO 9001 certification worth it?

The rewards of ISO 9001 certification are in the form of customer trust and business growth. It is a statement of responsible and accountable quality control. Companies who have been ISO 9001 certified have found themselves to be more efficient and have achieved improved customer satisfaction levels.

Is ISO 9001 certification difficult?

The process of ISO 9001 certification for any organisation is a huge commitment to time and effort. During this time, one must also expect improvements in various segments of the business. However, the rewards of the effort and time investment are worth it.

How long does it take to achieve ISO 9001 certification?

For an organisation of small to medium size, three-six months should be enough for the certification process. But without proper preparation and for larger enterprises, it may take 9-12 months.

What does it take to become ISO 9001 certified?

After the groundwork (documentation check and formalities to start audits with the certification body) is done, stage 1 can begin.

In stage 1, auditors will assess the QMS system against the standard requirements. They can suggest improvements or enforce compliances. Stage 2 is the evaluation of the QMS processes. The requirements of ISO 9001, actual implementation, and QMS requirements are evaluated, and a report and certificate will be issued thereafter.

Why is ISO 9001 important?

Adhering to the ISO 9001 quality management system means putting your customers first. It ensures that you consistently meet customer needs and raise their level of satisfaction. The quality management system clarifies goals and helps discover new business opportunities. In addition, it helps businesses and organisations operate more efficiently by identifying and addressing the risks connected to your business. Furthermore, as some industries and clients require ISO 9001 before doing business, it aids in the expansion of your organisation into new markets.

What role does sustainability play in ISO 9001?
ISO places great importance on sustainability. Due to climate change, the consideration of climate-related risks has already been mandated in certain integrated management systems. Extreme weather can disrupt supply chains, cause production downtime or increase energy demand, such as for cooling of the workplace.

Such risks must now be addressed systematically; organisations must ensure resilience. To this end, ISO has incorporated amendments (AMD 1:2024-02) into the Harmonised Structure (HS), which are valid without a revision of the standard. They are, therefore, already assessed in ISO 9001 audits today.

Frequently Asked Questions about ISO 9001 certification

Who is permitted to certify ISO 9001?
This is strictly regulated. Only accredited certification and conformity assessment bodies may perform official ISO 9001 audits and certification. These bodies must undergo a consistent accreditation process.

Important: a certification body may not audit itself.

How do ISO 9001 audits work?
Audits follow a systematic, structured process. The TÜV SÜD audit team checks that the requirements have been correctly and effectively implemented.
  • Stage 1 Audit: Review of documentation, completeness of QMS information and evaluation of readiness for Stage 2.
  • Stage 2 Audit: Review of the effective implementation of the QMS in practice, including employee interviews, visits to the site and process reviews such as order processing, supplier management and error and complaint handling.

Afterwards, the company receives the audit report and, if successful, the certificate. Any major non-conformities must be corrected before certification can be granted.

How long does the entire ISO 9001 process take, from assessment to certification?
There is no standard timeline. ISO 9001 is suitable for organisations of any size or industry, and the scope can vary.
What are the key points to bear in mind during the initial certification process?
There are several critical points to consider, particularly when seeking initial certification of a QMS to ISO 9001, including:
  • Strong commitment from leadership
  • Establishment of a project team
  • Emphasis on risk-based thinking, customer and process focus, and continuous improvement
  • Availability of documents and evidence during the audit (e.g. objectives, internal audit results, management review)

ISO 9001 is about establishing a QMS that is genuinely implemented within the organisation. The staff must be familiar with the processes, as well as their responsibilities and the quality targets, and be able to implement them in their day-to-day work.

How long is the certificate valid for?
ISO 9001 certificates are valid for three years. Annual surveillance audits are required during this period. After three years, a recertification audit is necessary.
How much does ISO 9001 certification cost?

Costs depend on multiple factors, such as:

  • Company size (number of staff and locations)
  • Scope of certification
  • Applicable or excluded requirements
  • Existing certifications that may influence audit time
