Put safety at the heart of your railway operations

Put safety at the heart of your railway operations

What is embedded systems assessment and certification?

Embedded systems services go beyond traditional product safety assessment and test the functional safety of your complex and interconnected technologies and systems according to the global standard IEC 61508, and derived standards like EN ISO 13849-1, IEC 62061, ISO 26262 and CENELEC EN 50129, CENELEC EN 50128 and CENELEC EN 50126 for the railway sector.

As the software and hardware used in different industrial sectors are becoming increasingly complex, and components are now sourced from multiple markets with shorter development lifecycles, more and more safety risks occur. As such, the reduction of safety risks to an acceptable level and the establishment of safety management for potential failures are increasingly important.

Why are generic embedded system safety Testing services important?

There are multiple benefits of verifying your embedded systems, including:

  • Ensure that your systems or equipment are compliant to relevant safety standards and operate correctly in response to its inputs
  • Establish an effective safety management to deal with potential operator errors, environmental changes and hardware and software failures
  • Reduce safety risks in your industrial environment, including hazards caused by malfunctions of complex systems
  • Avoid liability claims and costly reworks
  • Enhance product marketability with certification from a trusted third-party organisation

TÜV SÜD has extensive experience in embedded systems assessments and certification

TÜV SÜD offers extensive rail sector expertise and experience in functional safety issues to support global industries to test and certify their products to the highest safety standards. The knowledge, capabilities and network we have developed over the years enable us to provide all services of an independent testing organisation relevant for functional safety issues.

TÜV SÜD holds all necessary accreditations as a testing laboratory according to DIN EN ISO / IEC 17025 and for safety components according to the Machinery Directive Annex IV.

Our generic embedded systems safety services

We offer a complete portfolio of testing services for generic safety systems in the industry:

  • Independent safety assessment

TÜV SÜD provides independent safety assessments during the development lifecycle. We conduct assessments through a combination of on-site inspections and documentation review, resulting in an independent safety assessment report.

  • Certification

Our experts can certify your product in accordance with IEC 61508 and all relevant sector-specific safety standards, such as CENELEC EN 50129, CENELEC EN 50128 and CENELEC EN 50126, EN ISO 13849, ISO 26262 and IEC 61511.

  • Preliminary examination

Due to the complexity of the embedded systems, it is advisable to involve the test experts at an early stage. The applicable safety standards must be determined, and their interpretation defined. Our experts support you with the important GAP analysis (pre-evaluation) of the development processes as well as with the evaluation of the safety architecture.

  • Training

TÜV SÜD conducts functional safety training programmes for your development teams. Topics include IEC 61508, ISO 26262, EN ISO 13849-1, IEC 62061 and the EN 5012X series or the equivalent IEC standards. We can also customise in-house training to suit your needs onsite.
