As part of the global drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions there is a pressing need to move towards clean fuels for energy. The use of hydrogen as a replacement for natural gas in the gas grid networks is seen as a major contributor to meeting this objective. TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory is a world leading centre for flow metrology research and development and has built a world-first facility for the testing and calibration of domestic gas meters for hydrogen service, both pure hydrogen and blends with natural gas, in accordance with OIML R-137 and CEN/TC 237 for MID approval.

We have carried out flow testing of a domestic gas meter to support the development of a hydrogen grid infrastructure in the transition to net zero emissions.

Why is the Hydrogen Domestic Gas FlOW Facility Important?

The facility helps meter manufacturers determine if existing gas meters and new technologies under development are correctly measuring hydrogen flow rates. This is a crucial step to ensure that hydrogen gas meters deployed onto the market in the future will deliver accurate measurements for customer billing and taxation purposes. The facility can also be used for flow testing of other components aside from flow meters. It will also provide a platform capable of rendering the ongoing type-testing and meter verification services required by the industry.

TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory is the UK’s Designated Institute for Flow and Density measurement, under contract from BEIS, and part of the UK’s National Measurement System. It provides the UK’s measurement traceability that underpins all flow and density measurements, and transactions based upon these.
