The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a clarification regarding the implementation of its 2016 regulation applicable to nutraceuticals and other health supplements used in food products.
Published in May, the clarification gives food business operators (FBOs) the right to continue using existing food formulations that contain “mere combinations of vitamins and minerals only up to one RDA (recommended dietary allowance) in dosage formats such as tablets, capsules and syrups,” up until 30 June 2019, or until whenever the FSSAI issues further instructions, whichever is earlier.
The clarification also makes clear that any ingredient which has been banned under the FSSAI’s nutraceutical regulations cannot be used in any other food product, unless that ingredients is expressed approved for use under the scope of another regulation.
The complete text of the FSSAI clarification of its regulations applicable to nutraceuticals in food products is available at the FSSAI website here.
