EU Commission approves genetically-modified product for food/feed uses

The Commission of the European Union (EU) has recently authorised the use of additional genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) in connection with various food and feed products.

According to a notice published in the EU Commission’s Daily News Brief in December, the newly authorised GMOs include soybean 305423 x 40-3-2, soybean DAS-44406-6, soybean FG72 x A5547-127, soybean DAS-68416-4, oilseed rape MON 88302 x Ms8 x Rf3, and the renewal of maize 1507.

In its notice, the Commission notes that each of the approved GMOs have successfully completed “a comprehensive authorisation procedure, including a favourable scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).”

The authorisations are valid for 10 years, and food and feed products produced from these GMOs are still subject to the EU’s strict labelling and traceability rules.

The text of the EU Commission’s notice regarding its authorisation of additional GMOs is available here.
