The ISO 9001:2015 standard contains a new requirement stating that an organization has to determine its context and the needs of interested parties, which is a very different approach from the previous version of the standard. The writers of the document do provide guidance in the notes to help understand what that means.
Over the last few years auditing against this version of the standard, TÜV SÜD Auditor, Randall D’Amico, noticed that most organizations do not do a good job of determining the “context” of their organization. Mr. D’Amico notes that he sees either a repeat of the notes or a short list missing the most obvious elements that are influencing the business.
