Why Partner with TÜV SÜD for Your Transportation Testing Needs

Comprehensive Solutions and Expert Support

At TÜV SÜD, we're committed to delivering top-quality performance in electric vehicle (EV) battery and system solutions. We use our experience from North American, European, and Asian labs to offer the best independent battery testing in North America.

In July 2023, we opened our New Energy Vehicle Lab in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This 80,000 sq. ft. facility has the latest technology for comprehensive testing. It is the only fully sustainable transportation testing lab in the USA featuring a complete environmental scrubber to capture all toxic battery emissions, which shows our dedication to innovation and sustainability.

Auburn Hills New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Lab:

With more EV battery makers in Michigan, our nearby lab is more important than ever. The USMCA trade agreement, new infrastructure laws, and incentives are boosting battery manufacturing nationwide. TÜV SÜD is a committed supporter of this growth, planning more locations across the US. Meanwhile, we are already serving battery manufacturers from Auburn Hills and our lab near Toronto.

Jonathan Drew, Director - Transportation Testing Services North America, says, "The biggest change is the move from gasoline engines to electric propulsion. EVs makeup about 7% of light vehicles and will grow, potentially to over 50% by 2032. Our customers in marine, agricultural, ATV, and snowmobile sectors are all moving toward this exciting future.”

Key Capabilities:

  • Five indoor battery safety/abuse bunkers for year-round testing, supported by a full Environmental Scrubber
  • Testing for cells, modules, and packs
  • Standards compliance: UN 38.3, UN ECER100, GB/T, and ECE R10
  • Battery Crusher up to 1MN
  • Large electrodynamic vibration table for batteries up to 2500kg, 3m x 3m
  • Electric servo-actuated MAST system for 6 degrees of freedom testing
  • High voltage EMC testing of batteries and systems
  • Full-vehicle EMC coupled with EV dynamometer
  • High power, high current battery cyclers up to 1200V, 2000A, 1100kW
  • Flammability and gas analysis for ESS battery cell testing per UL9540A

Future of EV Battery Industry:

Jonathan says, "In the next ten years, although internal combustion engines will remain part of the market, the future will be electric. Lithium-ion and new chemistry batteries will continue to drive the EV industry. Solid-state batteries and hydrogen fuel cells are also emerging but will grow more slowly. TÜV SÜD is already working on solutions for these technologies, so we will be ready for whatever comes."

New Services Since 2023:

  • UL9450a cell-level storage testing
  • EU Battery Regulations guidance, analysis, consultation, and auditing
  • High-Performance Vibration Testing: Table to 350kN and high-frequency response
  • Upgraded and expanded EMC test capabilities in both Plymouth, MI and New Brighton, MN
