US EPA Updates Tolerance Levels for Pesticides Used in Food Products

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued final rules in connection with tolerance levels for two pesticides used in certain types of food products.

Published in the U.S. Federal Register in early May, the rules set new limits for the use of the pesticide bentazon in peas (specifically, “pea, dry, seed food commodity” as defined in the rule) and the use of the insecticide cyflumetofen in tea (“tea, dried food commodity”). For bentazon, the new tolerance level has been increased from 1part per million (ppm) to 3 ppm. The new tolerance level is consistent with that set in Canada, but greater than the maximum residue level (MRL) specified in the Codex Alimentarius, which is 0.5 ppm. For cyflumetofen, for which the Codex has no MRL, the new tolerance level in the U.S. will be set at 40 ppm.

The new tolerance levels for bentazon and cyflumetofen took effect upon the publication of the EPA’s final rules.
