The Commission of the European Union (EU) has once again updated the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for certain pesticides used in connection with food and feed of plant and animal origin.
Published in the Official Journal of the European Union in mid-June, Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/973 amends Annexes II and III of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 which specifies MRLs for pesticides used in or on food products. The new Regulation addresses the following eight chemicals:
Spanning 25 pages, the Regulation sets specific MRLs for these chemicals as they apply to hundreds of individual plant-based food products, including fresh and frozen fruits, tree nuts, fresh and frozen vegetables, leaf vegetables, cereals, teas, coffees and spices. The Regulation also provides updated MRLs for these chemicals as used in a wide variety of food products of animal origin, including meat, fish and dairy products.
