Achieve sustainable waste management with DIN SPEC 91436
Achieve sustainable waste management with DIN SPEC 91436
Organizations wishing to contribute to sustainable ecological, economic and social development cannot ignore the issue of a transparent, resource-saving circular economy when dealing with waste. Recycling is just one part of this; DIN SPEC 91436 takes a more holistic view, exceeds the minimum statutory requirements and is aimed at everyone who wants to measurably reduce waste and use unavoidable waste sustainably. DIN SPEC 91436 therefore provides guidance for the transparent use of resources for private companies, public institutions, cities, communities, associations, foundations and other organizations.
DIN SPEC 91436 was developed by a consortium of NGOs, science and business, including TÜV SÜD Management Service. The standard’s systematic approach exposes areas of development for waste and recyclables management, thereby helping companies to determine their level of progress and derive actions, with a view to continually reducing the amount of residual waste for the benefit of the environment, thereby saving costs.
The aim of all the procedures and processes is to create the prerequisites to retain all the resources used in the outlined cycle and to minimize the amount of unavoidable waste wherever possible.
The inner circle of the following graphic describes the recycling alternatives and the outer circle defines the DIN SPEC 91436 framework that we will develop together with yourselves. The interaction of both elements results in the continuous improvement in the level of progress of your waste and recyclables management.
During an on-site audit, independent, qualified TÜV SÜD experts examine the extent to which the requirements and criteria defined in the test specification are being met (checklists A, B, C of DIN SPEC 91436). They talk to the senior management team, the staff responsible for waste and recyclables management and other employees from various divisions, teams or departments. The results determine the level of progress and the corresponding certificate:
Our auditors also review relevant documentation, such as a commitment to comply with DIN SPEC 91436, waste avoidance plans, waste assessments, proof of disposal, evidence of training – either during or prior to the on-site audit.
The test specification is available free of charge from Beuth Verlag: DIN SPEC 91436 - 2021-05 - Beuth.de
Following a successful, voluntary audit without any significant deviations, your company will receive a certificate and permission to use the certification symbol. In order to maintain this certification, an annual audit with a positive assessment is required. Unannounced audits can also be performed on an ad-hoc basis.

TÜV SÜD provides extensive environmental and sustainability expertise and other compatible standards. DIN SPEC 91436, in particular, has major interfaces with the ISO 14001 environmental management system. Organizations can benefit from the combined certification of two or more standards, thereby significantly reducing their certification effort compared to individual certification.
In addition to ISO 14001, other compatible standards include ISO 50001 (energy management) and ISO 26000. These create a framework that helps companies to improve their CSR and develop a socially responsible organization. They combine the operational principles and core themes of corporate social responsibility.
