Packaging Testing of ROKBOX Artwork Packaging Cases

Profile: ROKBOX is a recent start-up company offering solutions for customers moving and storing high-value artworks. TÜV SÜD provided ROKBOX with testing services which gave them validated independent data leading to them winning an industrial packaging award.

Business challenge: For their casing products to be viable in a conservative, risk-averse market, ROKBOX realised they would need to have highly credible, independent evidence of the performance of their cases, against key parameters that had already been defined by experts. These included vibration, shock, penetration, temperature, humidity, water and fire testing.

Our solution: ROKBOX chose TÜV SÜD because TÜV SÜD have all the technical resources to provide the testing they required, plus a highly credible global reputation as testing experts.

ROKBOX’s methodology was broadly:

1. Test the performance of the leading products currently used by the market.
2. Create fully functional prototypes, using real industrial materials/production processes, which incorporated the design innovations we had developed.
3. Test these prototypes and benchmark them against existing case performance.
4. Keep iterating this process until they had achieved parity or superiority against all the key parameters (7 key ‘areas of performance’ in total, with between 2 & 4 significant variables in each).

Business benefits: ROKBOX needed to generate this testing data (for which they did not have the resources), and also needed to demonstrate to the market that the data came from a credible, and completely independent source.

The major benefit of this work is that they can now offer the art market a full range of transport and storage cases, which will both save them money and dramatically reduce their carbon footprint.
