The Measurement Focus Group is supported by the UK Government's National Measurement System (NMS). The group focuses on flow measurement and flow-related issues in industry. Club members are invited to attend technical club meetings.

Delegates are primarily from the UK, but we often have presenters from USA, Norway and other parts of Europe. It's typically operators, consultants, manufacturers, service companies and also delegates from the UK Oil & Gas Regulator. The Measurement Focus Group is supported by the UK Government's National Measurement System (NMS). The group focuses on flow measurement and flow-related issues in industry. AGENDA
09:30 Registration and networking
10:00 Chairperson introduction
Chris Mills (TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory)
10:10 Calibration of flowmeters via digital communication protocols
Tariq Boussouara (TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory)
- Introduction to NEL research project on calibrating flowmeters with digital protocols
- Discuss drivers for the project (e.g. push towards digital infrastructure, benefits of digital communication, analogue vs digital equivalency).
- Discuss challenges for digital calibration (e.g. meter dynamic response, communication latency, timestamping of digital data, synchronising data with reference system)
- Discuss project next steps (set up of digital testbed, plans for initial trials with Coriolis transmitters)
10:35 Field trial of a multiphase Coriolis meter
Saketh Mahalingam (Aramco)
- Overview of the multiphase Coriolis meter design
- Flow-loop calibration and test conditions
- Field trial setup and operating conditions
- Field trial results, key findings and future work
11:00 Coffee and networking
11:30 Determining flare gas composition without a sampler
Phil Stockton (Accord)
- Flare gas composition is required for environmental reporting to calculate emission factors (Te CO2/Sm3)
- Flare header sampling can be difficult resulting in unreliable sample compositions - the reliability of sample compositions can be cross-checked against ultrasonic flare meter speed of sound measurement
- Accord's CHARM process simulation package allows calculation of flare compositions based on live plant data, which is cross checked for accuracy against the USM speed of sound measurement
- This on-line tool reduces sampling frequency and costs
11:55 Density determination of LNG for accurate custody transfer
Shima Ghanaatian (TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory)
- The role of LNG density and compositional analysis in custody transfer and energy determination
- Measurement challenges arising from cryogenic conditions and compositional variability
- Current approaches to LNG density prediction, from empirical methods to modern equations of state
- Current progress in the CryoMet project towards improved density determination of LNG mixtures
12:20 Lunch and networking
13:05 Utilising diffraction to exploit chordal paths for swirl measurements in clamp-on USM array flowmeters
Ben McHugh (Warwick University)
- Clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters are widely used for non-invasive flow measurement, but traditional transit-time methods sometimes struggle with swirl-induced errors
- Ultrasonic diffraction enables non-diametrical paths from a transducer mounted normal to the pipe wall
- By combination of several chordal paths, azimuthal elements of pipe flow can be measured and cancelled from axial flow measurements
- Initial proof of concept measurements are promising, with swirl being measured and cancelled accurately in zero axial flow conditions effectively
13:30 4-tube “2-in-1” Coriolis design with two independent measuring tube pairs
Jonathan Humphries (Endress+Hauser)
- The effect of independent measuring tube pairs on measurement uncertainty
- Enhanced Zero Point stability validated under varying temperature, pressure and viscosity conditions
- The influence of a 4-tube design upon Reynolds number correction and pressure loss
- How independent measurements tackle transient disturbances and offer enhanced process insights
13:55 Chairperson’s closing remarks
14:00 Coffee and networking
14:15 Tour of Endress+Hauser Centre
