India approves footwear quality control orders mandating certification requirements

 On 27 October 2020, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India approved three Quality Control Orders for footwear to be sold in Indian market. These orders are:

• the footwear made from leather and other materials (Quality Control) Order 2020¹
• the footwear made from all-rubber and all polymeric material and its components (Quality Control) Order, 2020²
• the Personal Protective Equipment Footwear (Quality Control) Order, 2020.³

The Bureau of Indian Standards would be the authority for certification and enforcement for these orders.

According to these orders, goods or articles specified in these orders must conform to the corresponding Indian Standards and shall bear the Standard Mark [ISI] under a licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards.

However, these orders would not apply to the goods or articles those are meant for export.

Originally these orders were set to become effective from 27 October 2020, however, according to the further amendments dated 4 December 2020, the effective date of these orders was postponed to 1 July 2021.^{4, 5, 6}

Following tables provide the list of goods or articles and corresponding compulsory Indian Standards for certification. The latest version of Indian Standards including the amendments shall be used.
