Brazil: Portaria No. 78, 2021 Approving Technical Regulation for AC Electronic Ballasts for Straight, Circular and Compact Tubular Fluorescent Lamps

On 11 February 2021, the Brazil National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality (INMETRO)¹ published Portaria No. 78/2021² which approves the Technical Regulation for Electronic Ballasts for Straight, Circular and Compact Tubular Fluorescent Lamps. It applies to electronic ballasts which are marketed separately or as part of luminaires. Electronic ballasts manufactured, imported, distributed and marketed in the national territory must be safe for the user and comply with the provisions of this Regulation.

Ballasts covered in scope must comply with Brazilian Technical Standards ABNT NBR 14417:2011 AC supplied electronic ballasts for tubular fluorescent lamps - General and safety requirements and ABNT NBR 14418:2011 AC supplied electronic ballasts for tubular fluorescent lamps - Performance requirements. The certification of the products issued by an accredited certification body, by INMETRO, is considered as the proof of safety compliance.

This Portaria is coming into force on 01 March 2021.
