IEC 61508 – Foundation
Our training course “IEC 61508: Foundation” consists of six core modules. Participants are introduced to the fundamental principles of functional safety in accordance with IEC 61508 and the required processes within the safety lifecycle. The course enhances professional competence in safety-related functions for electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic systems.
To deepen understanding, practical examples and review questions are integrated throughout the training.
Module 1 – Fundamentals of Functional Safety
Introduction to the basic principles of safety and functional safety, including risk assessment and risk reduction
Key standards and requirements supporting IEC 61508
Legal aspects of functional safety
Challenges posed by cybersecurity and new regulations
Module 2 – Risk Reduction and the Safety Concept
Overview of the full safety lifecycle according to IEC 61508
Early lifecycle phases covering concept and scope definition
Hazard and risk analysis, including risk assessment and required level of risk reduction
Safety requirements and modes of operation
Module 3 – Safety Management
Functional safety management requirements within organizations and during product development
Recommended methods and techniques to avoid systematic faults
Definition of safety requirements for compliant development
Post-development lifecycle phases
Verification, validation, audits, and assessments as key compliance activities
Module 4 – Development of Safety-Related Systems
System design and development, including hardware-specific aspects
Two approaches for controlling and mitigating systematic faults
Hardware design considerations for safety-related equipment
Techniques for calculating reliability of safety elements
Module 5 – Realization
Reduction and control of hardware failures due to common cause failures (CCF)
Diagnostic techniques for detecting failures in safety-related systems
Maintaining safety in communication networks
ASIC development
Module 6 – Development of Safety-Related Software
Lifecycle phases and development models for safety-critical software
Software-specific development topics including tool qualification, coding standards, modeling and style guidelines, Agile methods, CI/CD
Test and validation methods including static and dynamic analysis, code coverage
Ensuring fulfillment of safety requirements
Special consideration of software methods such as OOP and AI
Learn the key topics of IEC 61508 through practical examples.
Understand the required work products and the proper handling of the safety plan.
