TÜV SÜD has modernised its crash centre in the German town of Oberpfaffenhofen. Improvements include a modular sled system, which makes it possible to carry out shock tests on the test object in the direction of travel and perpendicular to the direction of travel without the need for an additional assembly work.
Thanks to this installation, the duration of the relevant shock tests, such as those required for the approval of traction batteries in line with ECE-R100.02, can be significantly reduced.
The upgrade to the control software facilitates a real-time and efficient analysis and documentation of the test results and parameters. A newly installed lighting plant with the latest, high-performance LED lights makes it possible to capture perfect high-speed recordings of the tests.
The existing safety concept for the testing of active lithium-ion batteries has also been improved and is now setting the benchmark when it comes to the safety of sled tests on traction batteries.
Batteries and other test specimens up to 1,000 kg can be tested with a shock load of 90 g at the crash centre. Tests up to 150 g can be carried out on specimens with a lower weight.
TÜV SÜD offers an extensive range of accreditations with its crash tests. Besides batteries, other components such as belt systems, roof bars, seats and more are tested for type approvals.
The investment in the modernisations to the crash centre are part of a comprehensive expansion to the laboratory and underlines TÜV SÜD's commitment to being a leading player in the field of independent battery tests for electric vehicles. As a one-stop-shop for battery inspections, TÜV SÜD is one of the leading testing services providers for the inspection and certification of batteries in Europe.
