Learning Objectives
The seminar is focused on the standards EN50126, EN51028, EN50129 and EN50159 and is intended to provide an overview of the requirements for a safety demonstration. For this purpose, the entire life cycle of a railway system, starting with the system definition and identification of the hazards, determining the safety requirements and evidences of control of hazards is described.
Who will benefit?
Developers, testers, project leads, quality representatives and safety officers primarily focusing on the development of programmable electronic safety systems; users and integrators of safety devices and systems, etc.
Course Agenda
Four parts are planned, to cover lifecycle and RAMS topics (EN50126), Architecture and HW (EN50129), SW (EN50128) and safe communication (EN50159).
Part 1: EN50126 – day 1
The proposed seminar topics include the following:
- Overview: European directives, understanding standardization, standards in the railway signaling technology
- Elements of RAMS and affecting factors
- Risk / Risk Analysis
- Safety Integrity
- Life Cycle Model
Part 2: EN50129 - day 2
The proposed seminar topics include the following:
- Risk analysis: system definition, hazard identification, consequence analysis, risk assessment, THR assignment, common cause analysis, SIL assignment, Risk and hazard control ("Hour-Glass Model")
- Application of Life Cycle Model
- Quality Management
- Safety Management
- Safety demonstration (Safety case)
- Technical and functional safety
- Basic methods (FMEA, FTA)
Part 3: EN50128 – day 3
This part of the seminar includes in particular the following points:
- Definitions
- Software safety requirement levels
- Personnel and responsibilities
- Life Cycle Model: requirements for the applicable phases
- Use of COTS software
- Verification / Validation
- Techniques / measures
- Systems Configured by Application Data
Part 4: EN50159 - Safety relevant data transfer – day 3
This part of the seminar includes in particular the following points:
- Safety transmission system - reference architectures
- Overview of the threats
- Overview of the defences
- Hazard rate of the transmission channel

- Handout, containing the slides projected during the course, in case of online courses it will be provided in electronic format;
- Notebook for didactic use (where applicable), containing a copy of the standards necessary for the training course, to be returned at the end of the course. In order to respect copyright, all the standards of online courses can be provided for consultation only through access to a dedicated portal.
