Therefore hydrogen assumes a key role for sustainable energy storage to store excess electricity. Fuel cell systems are a key technology for leveling out generation and using when no wind is blowing or sun is shining. Additionally hydrogen offers the possibility for transporting the electricity, also overseas. For generation hydrogen, so-called power-to-gas systems are necessary to convert electricity into hydrogen. Hydrogen can be used in mobile applications as vehicles or trains, but it is also applicable in stationary systems, which are also playing an increasingly important role, e.g. in safeguarding critical infrastructures.

Course Description
Fuel cells represent one of the most important technologies for the use of hydrogen. For this purpose, they are used in both mobile and stationary areas; always integrated into a complex fuel cell system. The technology is used in different sectors. The best-known mobile application is the use of a fuel cell in motor vehicles with an electric powertrain. However, rail vehicles, industrial trucks and ships are potential areas of application for fuel cells. In the stationary area, the reconversion units can be used for emergency power supply or heat recovery. In this e-learning, you will learn, among other things, the basics of the various fuel cell technologies, how they function and interact with the subsystems, the applicable standards and guidelines, and the differences between stationary and mobile applications.
