WHAT IS SS 564 Green Data Centres?

564 : Part 1 : 2013 is a certifiable standard for green data centres. It is a standard developed specifically for Singapore by IT Standards Committee (ITSC) together with Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and SPRING Singapore, the Singapore Standard for Green Data Centres – Energy and Environmental Management Systems.

While data centres support development of various industries across sectors, they are also one of the highest contributors towards carbon emissions. Due to their complex IT equipment and cooling & electrical system requirements, data centres consume a lot of energy for power generation which not only inflates the utility bills but also leads to increase in the carbon emissions. Usually these cooling and electrical systems are designed to operate at full load. However, most of them operate only at a fraction of this load. This leads to expending a much heavier power load than necessary and wastage of energy. It is said that a large data centre in Singapore consumes energy that is proportional to the energy consumption of 10000 households. 

SS 564 is modelled after EnMS ISO 50001 and establishes the frame work for the systems and processes to continuously improve energy efficiency and lower the energy consumption of your data centres. It implements the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology which helps you mitigate the risk of energy wastage and optimises the energy consumption in the data centres.
