Thailand: Establishment of Standard TIS 60335-2(32) on Household and Similar Electrical Appliances - Particular Safety Requirements for Massage Appliances

JUNE 2023 - ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS 

On 15 March 2022, the Thai Ministry of Industry published an Announcement No. 6388, 2022 to establish Industrial Standard TIS 60335 Part 2(32)-2564 on Household and Similar Electrical Appliances (Safety: Particular Requirements for Massage Appliances), in accordance with the Industrial Product Standards Act.

TIS 60335 Part 2(32)-2564 is harmonized with IEC 60335-2-32, dealing with the safety of electric massage appliances for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.

Below are the examples of appliances covered in the scope of this standard:

- foot massagers;
- water-filled foot massagers;
- hand-held massagers;
- massage beds;
- massage belts;
- massage chairs;
- massage pads

Appliances which are not intended for normal household use but still may cause danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used in shops, in light industry and on farms, are also in the scope of this Standard. This Standard aims at the common harm caused by appliances encountered by all people in and around the home. However, generally, it does not consider the situation:

- persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;
- children playing with the appliance

This Standard does not cover:

- appliances exclusively for industrial use;
- appliances intended to be used in locations with special conditions required, such as explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas);
- electric foot care appliances which do not include motors and other electric appliances for the care of skin or hair (IEC 60335-2-23)
- electric appliances for beauty care of persons and intended for household, commercial and similar purposes (IEC 60335-2-115).

The Standard clarifies the applicable scope, definitions, general requirements, test conditions, marking requirements, protection against access to live parts, leakage current and electric strength, etc.

This Announcement is implemented on 14 May 2023.
