As the push for hydrogen production increases, so does the need to develop more electrolysers. At TÜV SÜD we provide the essential testing and certification to ensure your electrolyser is safe and reliable as well as interoperable (renewable energy or power grid). Our team of experts provide the right basis for your Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) and Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) Electrolysers certification based on the ISO 22734 standard. Solid Oxide Electrolysers (SOECs) testing and verification services are also provided.  

WHAT IS ISO 22734 AND HOW DOES TÜV SÜD SUPPORT YOUR ELECTROLYSER CERTIFICATION 

ISO 22734 is the international standard for hydrogen generators using water electrolysis. The standard is quite detailed yet at TÜV SÜD we tune it according to your specific application with simple checks that the manufacturer needs to perform based on the core points below.  

Summary of the standard ISO 22734: 

• Applicable to electrolysers with an AEM, PEM or aqueous acids or bases.

• General guidance on safe construction of the mechanical and electrical components of the electrolysers. 

• Specifies minimum requirements for safe operation conditions for protection of the service personnel and equipment.

• Routine Test Specification for (serial production):

• Functional, leakage, basic electrical installation

• Type qualification test specification: 

• Like routine but more detailed, mechanical integrity, performance tests  
(@ 25% -100% capacity)

• Under reference conditions

• 15-35°C,75% humidity, 75-101kPa air pressure, no weather influence 

 

Once these checks are completed, the customer receives:  

- Certificate of conformity of the product (type approval) 

- Detailed Test Report 

- TÜV SÜD Test Mark (UKCA/ UKCE) for use in documentation. This test mark conveys TÜV SÜD’s global reputation and indicates the highest quality of testing standard, making the product stand out from the competition.

INTEROPERABILITY OF THE ELECTROLYSERS VIA MERGING ISO 22734 WITH EU/GB CONFORMITY 

Since this is a very dynamic market with huge potential of growth, new players from all regions venture into the electrolysis production business. Yet they are not quite sure, especially for low carbon H2 production via electrolysis how to ensure conformity of their product in the existing standards. For example, investigation of combination of several systems (PEM/AEM/SOEC + desalination), wind turbine and electrolyser.  
The ISO 22734 is based on steady state application and thus has some limitations when merged with external energy (renewable, grid) and water (fresh/desalinated) sources.  AT TÜV SÜD we close these gaps by introducing the EU/GB conformity standards merged within the ISO 22734 certification.
