Assess AI risks, strengthen governance and demonstrate responsible AI practices with AI Essentials governance assessment & certification.

What is AI Essentials?

AI Essentials is a comprehensive certification scheme designed to move organizations beyond general IT security and address the unique technical, ethical, and operational risks posed by artificial intelligence.

While traditional cybersecurity frameworks (like Cyber Essentials) focus on network defence and keeping hackers out, AI Essentials focuses directly on the integrity, ethics, and reliability of the “intelligence” you are actively using or providing.

It serves as a fundamental framework for businesses operating in a modern, automated economy.

How TÜV SÜD can help with AI Essentials assurance and governance certification for your organisation

AI Essentials is an assurance framework designed to help organisations demonstrate that they are using artificial intelligence responsibly, securely and effectively. It provides a structured set of requirements covering AI governance, risk management, security, transparency, human oversight and continual improvement. Rather than focusing solely on technical controls, AI Essentials helps organisations establish the policies, processes and accountability needed to build trust in the way AI is developed, deployed and used.

The framework applies to organisations of all sizes that develop, supply or use AI technologies, including widely adopted tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. Whether AI is embedded within business processes, used by employees to support decision-making, or incorporated into products and services, AI Essentials provides a practical and proportionate approach to demonstrating responsible AI practices.

As organisations increasingly adopt AI, customers, regulators, government bodies and supply chain partners are seeking greater assurance that AI is being used safely and appropriately. AI Essentials enables organisations to independently demonstrate their commitment to trustworthy AI through a recognised assurance framework, helping to build confidence with stakeholders, support procurement requirements and establish a foundation for more advanced AI governance programmes.

Controlling how AI is used across your organisation can be a huge challenge. If you cannot demonstrate effective governance, oversight and accountability, you risk losing trust and future opportunities. AI Essentials certification helps you prove your AI is being used responsibly.

What are the "three pillars of trust" that underpin the AI Essentials scheme?

The AI governance framework operates on three foundational principles:

  • Technical resilience (The shield): Hardening AI systems against prompt injections, data poisoning, and unauthorised logic manipulation.
  • Ethical governance (The compass): Aligning AI behaviour with legal requirements and human values through transparency, bias monitoring, and active human oversight.
  • Supply chain transparency (The map): Creating complete visibility into the AI tools being used via an AI Asset Registry to eliminate undocumented vendor risks.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

  • What is an AI governance assessment?
An AI governance assessment reviews policies, processes, roles, responsibilities, risk management, and compliance measures to determine whether AI is being used responsibly, ethically, and in line with relevant standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Why is AI governance important?
AI governance is important because it helps organisations use AI safely, responsibly, and transparently. Strong AI governance shows a proactive commitment to responsible AI use rather than waiting for issues or regulatory requirements to arise.
  • Who is AI Essentials for?
AI Essentials is designed for any organisation that uses, provides or develops AI. This includes businesses using everyday AI tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Claude and other AI-powered applications, as well as organisations building their own AI solutions. Whether AI is used to improve productivity, support decision-making, automate processes or deliver customer services, AI Essentials helps establish the governance, oversight and accountability needed for responsible adoption. The framework is particularly relevant for organisations that want to manage risk, demonstrate trustworthiness, meet customer expectations and prepare for growing regulatory and procurement requirements.
  • What is the difference between AI Essentials (Basic) and AI Essentials Plus?
AI Essentials (Basic): A verified self-assessment that focuses on policy adoption, staff AI literacy, establishing an AI Asset Registry, and securing a formal Board-Level AI Risk Briefing.

AI Essentials Plus: An independent technical audit conducted within 3 months of the Basic certification. It involves active "Red Team" stress testing by an accredited assessor to prove that the organisation's technical guardrails actually work in practice.
  • What risks does AI assurance address?
AI assurance moves beyond general IT security to address the unique risks posed by AI, focusing on the integrity, ethics, and reliability of the "intelligence". This includes addressing adversarial attacks (like prompt injection and data poisoning), toxic hallucinations, biased decision-making, and the broader societal or environmental impacts of AI deployment.
  • Does this protect us from attacks/hacking/data leaks?
Yes. The first pillar, "Technical Resilience," focuses on hardening AI systems against attacks specifically designed to manipulate machine learning logic. It mandates technical controls such as semantic firewalls, data masking (to prevent the leakage of PII or corporate secrets), and strict input/output guardrails.
  • How does this help our liability?
With the rise of AI-specific litigation, holding the certification provides a "defensible trail". By demonstrating that an auditor-approved AI Impact Assessment (AIIA) was completed, it shows the business acted with "due diligence," which can potentially reduce legal and insurance liabilities if an AI error occurs.
  • How long is my AI Essentials certificate valid for?
Your AI Essentials certificate is valid for 12 months.
