TÜV SÜD Clean Energy Consultant wins Royal Society of Chemistry’s Rising Star in Industry Prize

Congratulations to Dr Edris Joonaki, a consultant at TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory, who has won the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Rising Star in Industry Prize in recognition of brilliance in research and innovation.

Edris won the prize for significant technical leadership and contributions to the delivery of UK-government-funded hydrogen and carbon capture and storage projects for net zero. The award recognises outstanding contributions made by individuals working in the chemical sciences in the early stages of their career in industry.

His expertise in flow assurance and thermodynamics involves understanding the physical properties of energy resources so they flow to where they’re needed and accurately measuring the amount that’s flowing. Users can then work out usage and be charged the correct amount on their bill. 

At TÜV SÜD, Edris works on the decarbonisation of the oil and gas industry, including carbon capture and storage (CCS) and the hydrogen economy. The company is the UK National Standard holder of flow measurements and Edris’ job is to ensure its clients’ equipment delivers similar high standards of accuracy. He works on many interesting projects, looking at the behaviour of hydrogen and CO₂ when they are transported or stored which he discussed in his CCUS and Hydrogen Economy Going Through Transportation Media with Chemical Thermodynamics webinar which is available to watch now.

After receiving the prize of £3000 and a trophy, Edris said:

“It is my great honour and privilege to stand here where I am now with receiving this very prestigious award from the UK’s Royal Society of Chemistry. I will continue doing my best to be a role model for young, talented engineers in the energy sector, particularly energy transition and net zero in the UK and also worldwide.”
