TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF

Following the successful completion of my A-Levels in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, I found myself on the threshold of an engineering career. Consequently, I made the decision to pursue a degree in Petroleum Engineering at the esteemed Petroleum University of Technology, an institution with a rich history as one of Iran's oldest technology universities. This choice not only granted me a solid and distinct foundation in the field of petroleum engineering but also exposed me to invaluable practical experience within a professional setting.

Upon obtaining my undergraduate degree, I made the bold choice to relocate to Scotland in order to embark on a PhD journey in Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University situated in Edinburgh. The prospect of furthering my education abroad captivated me, as it promised exposure to diverse cultures and a range of educational and professional landscapes. Throughout my time at Heriot-Watt University, I seized the opportunity to publish numerous scholarly articles in reputable journals and contribute to pioneering research endeavours.

Today, my role as an Industrial Consultant and Technical Lead at TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory involves overseeing a spectrum of flow assurance and metering complexities within the realm of the energy industry. I also deliver webinars and you watch the on-demand recording of my webinar about CCUS and Hydrogen Economy Going Through Transportation Media with Chemical Thermodynamics.

Why did you choose to join TÜV SÜD?

I was drawn to apply to TÜV SÜD primarily due to its cutting-edge facilities which offer an ideal environment for conducting research in the fields of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), as well as hydrogen. The prospect of utilising such state-of-the-art resources to contribute to advancements in these pivotal areas greatly appealed to me, and it aligns perfectly with my passion for innovative and impactful research.

Where do you work?

I currently work hybrid both at home and on-site in East Kilbride.

What are your main areas of expertise?

My main areas of expertise are:

  • Thermodynamics and thermophysical properties of the fluids.
  • Flow assurance & measurement.
  • Hydrogen economy systems.
  • CO2 transportation and storage.
  • Surface chemistry.
  • Oil & gas production chemistry.
  • Reservoir engineering.

What does your role involve?

Presently, I am the designated individual entrusted with the task of resolving diverse challenges related to flow assurance and metering. This responsibility extends beyond the scope of the conventional oil and gas sector to encompass hydrogen economy systems and the comprehensive CCUS value chain. Collaborating with a diverse array of customers, each with unique demands, has become an integral aspect of my role. Within the business, I am also accountable for the delivery of UK traceable National Standards pertaining to measurements of fluid properties.

What most interests you about your role?

Addressing the challenges related to CCUS and hydrogen flow assurance and metering enables me to creatively apply the diverse skill set I have cultivated throughout my experience in petroleum engineering. This role allows for a fresh and engaging perspective on utilising these skill sets. Furthermore, it's important to note that the realm of fluid flow and properties assessment remains dynamic, consistently unveiling novel areas of interest across various industry domains. As a result, my position places me at the forefront of pioneering measurement innovations and technologies. This aspect of my role is undeniably the most gratifying, as it holds the potential to positively reshape our way of life.

What exciting developments have you seen in at TÜV SÜD since you started?

I was Technical Leader of a project on “Novel thermodynamic & PVT platform development” for the globally unique £16m Advanced Multiphase Facility (AMF). This unique facility has positioned Scotland as a world leader in multiphase flow measurement, a key area for subsea development. It also provides the UK with a unique global capability in flow metrology for subsea engineering and oil & gas innovation and enhancing the growth ambitions of energy companies worldwide.

What future trends do you see developing in your area of work?

The UK Continental Shelf stands poised to assume a pivotal role in this context, showcasing immense potential. From harnessing water electrolysis for eco-friendly hydrogen production to securely sequestering CO2 within subterranean geological formations, this region possesses readily available natural resources capable of making substantial contributions to the UK's ambitious climate objectives.

I hold a strong sense of optimism regarding the energy landscape of the future. My field of expertise is intrinsically connected to the process of decarbonising the oil and gas sector. While the transformative influence of advanced technologies such as hydrogen and CCUS is yet to be fully realised, its true impact will manifest with the widespread adoption across the entirety of the UK. Encouragingly, energy operators are already taking proactive steps, resulting in a growing demand for the necessary technologies to bring hydrogen fuel cells and gas into fruition.

What is your biggest challenge?

My most significant challenge within the context of the net zero and energy transition market lies in effectively addressing the requisites of achieving net zero by 2050. This endeavour hinges, in part, on the successful development and integration of two transformative technologies: CCUS and hydrogen. A pivotal aspect of surmounting this challenge involves the strategic reimagining and repurposing of existing oil and gas infrastructure. This approach not only facilitates the widescale implementation of these innovations but also extends the operational longevity of current assets, curbing decommissioning expenses, and safeguarding the livelihoods of countless industry professionals.
