New Head of Flow Programme

In an exciting development for TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory, Dr Marco Geron has been appointed as the new Head of the Flow Programme. With a background in aerospace engineering and computational fluid dynamics plus a wealth of experience in academia and industry, Marco brings a fresh perspective to the role.

TÜV SÜD is at the forefront of flow and density measurement research, with an extensive range of flow facilities. As the UK’s Designated Institute for Flow Measurement, we lead the Flow Programme, a UK National Measurement System (NMS) science programme of activities associated with flow metrology.

Marco took over the role in early July 2024 from Dr Martin Hanton, who is moving full time to a role as TÜV SÜD’s Green Energy and Sustainability Director for Northern Europe. Marco is excited about his new challenge saying:

"Advancing to the Head of the Flow Programme and leading the contract from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to serve as the UK’s Designated Institute for Flow Measurement, is a prestigious role. I'm keen to work with our experts, both internally within TÜV SÜD, and externally through the Programme Expert Group (PEG) to address industries challenges in flow measurement. Our work as part of the National Measurement System involves developing facilities, leading research, sharing our findings, and collaborating with government bodies, committees, and industry leaders. I look forward to working with our incredible team to continue supporting the UK’s international efforts on flow measurement standardisation and best practice. A big thanks to my predecessor, Martin Hanton, for his fantastic leadership, which has set us up for future success."

Marco graduated in 2004 with a PhD in aerospace engineering from the University of Rome, “La Sapienza" and has primarily worked in academia as a researcher and then as a lecturer. At Queen’s University Belfast, in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace, he taught various courses, including fluid dynamics, propulsion, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). His research interests have spanned the thermo-fluid discipline, applying these principles across diverse fields and leading numerous national and international research projects.

Marco’s comprehensive experience and dynamic approach are set to drive the Flow Programme towards new heights, ensuring that TÜV SÜD continues to lead in flow measurement and innovation.
