Professional testing services to meet the highest safety standards.
Bicycle and E-bike Safety Testing refers to a series of tests conducted to ensure that bicycles and electrically assisted bicycles (e-bikes) meet safety, performance, and durability standards. TÜV SÜD provides a comprehensive range of services, including bicycle frame testing, electric bicycle testing, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) assessments. These tests are essential for compliance with international regulations (such as ISO 4210 for bicycles and EN 15194 for e-bikes in Europe), as well as to ensure user safety and product reliability.
Bicycles and e-bikes are increasingly popular for transport, leisure, and sports. This growing demand requires strict compliance with safety regulations covering mechanical, chemical, and electrical aspects. TÜV SÜD conducts bicycle and electric bicycle safety testing in accordance with international standards, ensuring safe and compliant products.
Our accredited bicycle testing lab operates under ISO/IEC 17025 and performs tests according to the following bicycle frame testing standards:
• UNI EN ISO 4210 – Safety requirements for adult bicycles
• UNI EN ISO 8098:2023 – Safety requirements for children’s bicycles
• EN 15194:2017/A1:2023 – Requirements for electrically power-assisted cycles (EPAC)
Mechanical safety tests according to ISO 4210 or customised protocols for compliance and TÜV SÜD mechanical safety product marking. Chemical safety tests are also carried out in accordance with the REACH Regulation (No. 1907/2006), along with technical support services for the design and preparation of the technical file.
Bicycles intended for younger users are tested in accordance with EN ISO 8098 and EN 71-1. TÜV SÜD also performs chemical safety tests in compliance with the REACH Regulation and provides regulatory support to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
For electric power-assisted bicycles, TÜV SÜD performs mechanical safety tests according to EN ISO 15194:2018, as well as electromagnetic compatibility and electrical safety tests. Chemical safety tests in accordance with the REACH Regulation are also carried out, together with technical support to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
TÜV SÜD offers a complete portfolio of bicycle and e-bike safety testing services, including:
Plus, technical assistance services:
Ensure your bicycles and e-bikes meet the highest safety standards. Contact TÜV SÜD for professional bicycle and e-bike safety testing services.
A compliant bicycle will have successfully passed bicycle and e-bike safety testing according to international standards such as ISO and EN. It will also include documentation certifying compliance.
The technical file contains all necessary documentation to demonstrate compliance, including risk assessments, bicycle frame testing results, and user instructions.
Muscle-powered bicycles undergo mechanical and chemical safety tests, while e-bikes require additional electric bicycle safety testing and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) checks, alongside mechanical testing.
E-bikes must comply with EN 15194 for electrical and mechanical safety and meet the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC requirements, which include CE marking and a complete technical file.
TÜV SÜD provides full technical assistance, including design support, bicycle testing lab services, technical file preparation, and user manual review to ensure compliance with safety standards.
The number and type of tests depend on the bicycle type and components. However, all relevant tests, such as bicycle frame testing, electrical safety, and EMC, must be performed to ensure full compliance.
Testing duration varies based on complexity. Partial tests may take one day, while complete electric bicycle testing (including mechanical, electrical, and EMC checks) can take up to two weeks or more. Timelines are always shared with clients during the feasibility and quotation stages.
