This year, our Dunbar Boardman Division celebrates 40 years of operation in the lift industry.
Dunbar & Boardman was established in 1981 by Henry Dunbar and Peter Boardman. The two company founders had met previously while working for the same company. Henry Dunbar was a successful sales executive who had generated many high-profile wins, however, he felt he was not appreciated by his then employer. Meanwhile, Peter Boardman was setting out on his career path in the lift industry, starting as an Apprentice aged 16, before progressing to Lift Tester, then Supervisor.
An incident at work proved the catalyst for Henry to make his next career move, and he subsequently invited Peter to join him in setting up their own business. In 1981, Dunbar & Boardman was formed and the pair moved into a top floor office in the City of London, close to where the Gherkin Tower stands today. Henry and Peter completed their first project for Equity & Law, who are now part of Axa, and their business took off from there.
“By 2015 I felt that I had grown the company as far as I could. As Henry had retired, I decided to search for suitable companies to buy our business and take it to the next level,” explained Peter.
“During my search, I found TÜV SÜD, and instantly found that the branding and growth ambition struck a chord with the company we had nurtured.”
Today, 40 years after forming in a small office in London, TÜV SÜD Dunbar Boardman is an international organisation that is still growing strong and continues to serve as the largest independent lift consultancy in the UK.
‘The only direction is up’
After 5 years of retirement, Peter Boardman can see only one direction for the lift industry: “The lift industry is here to stay: the only direction is up. Cities are going to grow upwards, for example China. Many of our own developments are also rising up into the sky rather than the low-rise developments of the past.”
Paul Hastings, Managing Director of TÜV SÜD Dunbar Boardman said: “We are delighted to continue the legacy of both Peter and Henry and look forward to the next 40 years of continuing to serve the industry."
