Electromobility: Quick test for the battery

With the AVILOO battery test, the condition of the battery in the e-car can be determined quickly. TÜV SÜD and AVILOO offer a new battery test for used electric cars. Alongside a condition test for private customers, the portfolio will also include flash tests for car dealerships and fleet operators. The latter supplies B2B customers with fast information about the condition of the battery.

AVILOO boxThe traction battery accounts for up to 50 percent of the total value of an electric vehicle. It is therefore all the more important when trading in used vehicles to have precise information about the condition of the battery. In cooperation with the Austrian company AVILOO, TÜV SÜD not only offers battery condition tests for private customers, but will also provide so-called flash tests for dealerships and fleet operators. The flash test is especially designed for a large vehicle throughput and provides initial indications about the condition of a battery. B2B customers receive quick information about the condition of the battery when purchasing or returning vehicles. The procedure is currently run in test mode for the leasing returns of various vehicle manufacturers and in car dealerships. “The flash test shows how we continuously work flat out on new test methods - currently to also support car dealerships and workshops in their trading with battery electric vehicles. The assessment of the condition of the traction battery is an important contribution to value stability and is thus indispensable in the trading of used electric vehicles”, says Markus Gregor, Program Manager Battery Evaluation at TÜV SÜD.

The cooperation partners, AVILOO and TÜV SÜD, started a detailed battery condition test especially for private customers back in 2022. The new flash test, on the other hand, is designed for the B2B sector and works significantly faster. Abnormalities, defects, and anomalies are detected by the flash test. Handling, charging cycles, age - these are factors that influence the condition of batteries.

To perform the test, a diagnostic tool is connected to the vehicle’s OBD interface. The tool then analyses different technical parameters of the battery. The condition of the battery is then determined on this basis. The diagnostic tool sends the results to the AVILOO cloud, where they are evaluated. If any abnormalities occur, the battery is subjected to the more precise State-of-Health (SoH) procedure.
