Clean Fuels Consultant - Research and Development

Tell us about yourselfMahdi Sadri

My background is mainly in the field of energy and fluid flow. I have a BSc and MSc in Petroleum Engineering and a PhD in Fluid Flow and Flow Metering. I joined TÜV SÜD in January 2022 after working as a postdoctoral researcher in two positions at the University of Aberdeen and Coventry University. My previous roles involved carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and multi-phase flow.

Why did you choose to apply to TÜV SÜD?

I had collaborated with TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory during my previous research projects. The staff and the managers were always nice, friendly and positive. The other reason was that the job focuses on clean fuels which I find very interesting. Transition to using clean fuels is necessary for our environment and I want to be a part of it.

Where do you work?

My job is mainly home-based but occasionally I go on a work trip or to a conference.

What are your main areas of expertise?

Clean fuels (especially hydrogen), flow measurement, and fluid flow.

What does your role involve?

My role mainly involves research, development and consultancy in the field of clean fuels and flow measurement. It is a combination of providing consultancy for other companies, as well as being a part of European and British funded projects on metrology.

I also teach on TÜV SÜD’s hydrogen training course which is a five-part training system for safe and proper handling of hydrogen.

What most INTERESTS you about your role?

Its contribution to saving our environment and making a better future. It is exciting for me that using hydrogen as fuel for mass transportation and heating homes is beginning to take off and is expanding fast.

What do you find most exciting about your job? What have been the highlights so far? Are there any interesting projects coming up?

What I like the most about my job is that people whom I work with are very nice and friendly. The work environment is positive and built based on trust.

In terms of projects, I have been involved in some very interesting ones on topics such as providing consultancy on the design and development of hydrogen refuelling stations for normal cars, buses and heavy goods vehicles. Also, I enjoy working on the European research projects on metrology in collaboration with national and designated metrology institutes from several countries.

What exciting developments have you seen in the company since you started?

The high demand for providing consultancy on hydrogen metering.

What future trends do you see developing in your area of work?

Considering all the advantages that hydrogen offers as a clean fuel, it seems it will have a bright future in contributing to the energy sector.

What is your biggest challenge?

Development of many types of hydrogen-related infrastructure such as refuelling stations and gas grids is still at its early stages. The lack of infrastructure along with relevant regulations and published research results are some of the main challenges, although they also create some opportunities for those who work in this field.

What do you see as the top perk of working for TÜV SÜD?

Nice and friendly work environment.

How have TÜV SÜD supported you?

I had a very good introduction to the company and everyone was very welcoming and helpful. Working with others is easy here and the company provides a lot of flexibility to create a better work environment.

How would you describe your fellow workers in five words?

Friendly, positive, helpful, professional, knowledgeable.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of applying for a role similar to yours?

I highly recommend considering working at TÜV SÜD. Not only does the company provide a good work environment but also their advertised roles are on topics that have a bright future.
