Modernisation of the AP1 emission chassis dynamometer in line with the new regulations GTR 15 / WLTP and US CRF Part 1066

In spring 2016, refurbishment of the AP1 emission chassis dynamometer started at the emission laboratory in Heimsheim, Germany. The refurbishment went beyond mere modernisation. The emission chassis dynamometer was extended and aligned with the requirements of GTR 15 / WLTP and US CRF Part 1066 – the new regulations which now apply. The new test rig is now under operation, and thus virtually at the same time as the new regulations.

Modernisation of the AP1 emission chassis dynamometer in line with the new regulations GTR 15 / WLTP and US CRF Part 1066 After an eventful period spanning 23 years of operation, in which roughly 50,000 emission tests were performed and a distance of over 600,000 kilometres was covered, it was time to modernise the emission chassis dynamometer at the Heimsheim laboratory. However, refurbishment of the AP1 emission chassis dynamometer at the Heimsheim emission laboratory went beyond the mere replacement of dated testing systems with cutting-edge measuring technology. Parallel to the modernisation of the dynamometer, the new regulations for emission testing were presented. The GTR15 / WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure) and US CRF Part 1066 represent the future standards in vehicle emission testing. TÜV SÜD has fully incorporated the requirements of these new regulations in the planning and design of ist modernised Emission chassis dynamometer. Any changes with regard to the new regulations during the modernisation of the test rig were immediately taken into account in the design and realisation of the new dynamometer. Thus, the start of production (SOP) of the AP1 dynamometer is virtually parallel to the coming into effect of the new regulations GTR15/WLT and US CRF Part 1066.

In installing this modernised emission chassis dynamometer which is aligned to the new regulations, TÜV SÜD is one of only a few service providers that can offer their customers emission testing according to the new regulations as soon as the new regulations come into effect.

The AP1 dynamometer further offers a broad range of additional and functional tests. Refurbishment of the chassis dynamometer was not limited to the emission testing of standard passenger cars but also took into consideration medium-sized vehicles (e.g. Mercedes Sprinter or VW Crafter). The design of the dynamometer further allows the test system to be used as a climate test rig at temperatures as low as -18°C.

The dynamometer thus can also be used to test the range of electric vehicles under winter weather conditions.

Thanks to this cutting-edge test system, we can thus offer clients in Europe, the USA and Asia testing and homologation services for emissions, efficiency and scope of all types of drive systems – from traditional combustion engines to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and pure electric vehicles (EV).

Thus, the new AP1 completes the existing test and measurement equipment in the emissions network, comprising six roller test benches and the same number of portable emission measurement systems (PEMS) for real-driving emissions (RDE) measurements as well as three engine dynamometers in the laboratories in Pfungstadt near Frankfurt, Roztoky near Prague and Heimsheim near Stuttgart.

The start of production (SOP) of the new AP1 emission chassis dynamometer was carried out in August 2017.
