As part of our Failure Analysis blog series, we will explore the applications of Failure Analysis in the Manufacturing industry. Read on as we share a case study from the industry.
A submarine power cable supplying electricity to an off-shore work station cluster in China experienced total power failure. It was found that the anti-corrosion sheath showed severe deformation on the exterior.
With a regional reputation for precise and thorough investigation of a wide spectrum of products, devices, components used by consumers, multinational firms and governmental bodies, the Failure Analysis (FA) team employs advanced research technology, such as FESEM and elemental analysis, to identify the root causes of failures in design, manufacturing processes or material.
Upon investigation by the FA team, it was determined that the fault occurred in the manufacturing process. The cable had undergone armouring despite the fact that the anti-corrosion sheath material (PE) had not sufficiently crystallised.
Thus, the armour steel wires partially damaged the anti-corrosion sheath, leading to premature failure of the cable.
To prevent recurrence of the failure, the FA team provided advice and recommendations to the manufacturer, to ensure thorough mixing of the raw materials followed by extrusion moulding and complete crystallisation of the sheath material before assembling the armour steel wires.
