Case Study: Failure Analysis for Electrical and Electronic Industry

Posted by: TÜV SÜD Expert

Next up on the Failure Analysis blog series, we will explore the applications of Failure Analysis in the Electrical and Electronic industry. Read on as we share a case study from the industry.

INTRODUCTION TO THE FAILURE ANALYSIS CASE STUDY IN THE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC INDUSTRY

In this blog, we will look at a case where a satellite ground station experienced a malfunction and reached out to our Failure Analysis team for an investigation.

IDENTIFYING THE ROOT CAUSE OF FAILURE

With a strong background in the areas of electrical and microelectronics, the Failure Analysis team conducts investigations using state-of-the-art equipment and offer thorough analyses using instruments such as FE-SEM microscopes.

OUTCOME OF THE ANALYSIS

Microchip

Through the investigation, the team found that the precise fault was an open circuit failure of a power distribution PCBA.

The cause of the failure was inadequate etching-back of the PHT (plated through-hole) following the drilling. This, in turn, resulted in improper Ni-plating and weak material bonding.

The Failure Analysis team therefore recommended the client to perform a more thorough cleaning process as this would have prevented the failure.
