Korea: Safety standards for household items subject to safety confirmation, Notice no. 2022-35, amendment on expansion of scope of portable laser devices and reflection of international standards

On 11 March 2022, the South Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) approved notice no. 2022-35 which published an amendment to the safety standards for household items subject to safety confirmation. In the amendment, the main change is on annex 9 to add portable laser devices subject to the safety confirmation to ensure consumer safety for products.

The amendment particularly expands the scope of the related technical regulation from laser pointers and toys to portable laser household devices of which wavelength range is 400-700 nm. It also regulates the laser beam output to level 2 or less. Products under industrial or commercial, performance, military use and products or household appliances managed by other domestic laws are out of this amendment.

The amendment further clarifies the warning labels requirement and precautions sections by following the national or international standard KS C IEC 60825-1.

The notice will be in force on 13 September 2022.
