Day 1 – National & International Regulations
Startingwith the fundamentals, we focus on how the legal framework works in the EU. Welook at why regulations exist, how safety is defined, and what “state of theart” means. Together, we work through roles and responsibilities, so youunderstand exactly where you fit and what is expected of you. Through casestudies and a short workshop, we apply this to real scenarios such as machinemodification and understand the requirements of the Machinery Regulation. Day 2 – RiskAssessment & Protective Devices (EN ISO 12100)
As the course progresses, wemove into EN ISO 12100 and show you how to structure a risk assessmentproperly. You’ll learn about identifying hazards, assessing risk, and applyingthe 3-step method for risk reduction. From there, we look at protective devicesin detail, including interlocks, emergency stops and non-contact systems, andexplain what works in practice and where common mistakes happen. You will alsocomplete a hands-on exercise to turn a hazard into a justified safety concept.

Day 3 –Electrical & Fluid Power Systems
We then build on this by focusing on realequipment. We walk through electrical safety requirements using EN 60204-1 andexplain what must be considered during design, testing and acceptance.Alongside this, we cover fluid and hydraulic power systems using applicablestandards and highlight key risks such as stored energy and unexpectedstart-up. Using practical examples, we show you how to identify issues andapply suitable controls.

What is the focus of the European Machinery Safety (EUMS)training course?

Are there any prerequisites for enrolling in the course?
There are no strict academic prerequisites to attend thecourse. However, you should ideally have a basic understanding of machinerysafety, engineering principles, or relevant industry experience.
If you are applying for certification:
- Technician level: Completion of at least 32 hours of relevant training is required
- Professional level: Requires training plus a minimum of 5 years’ experience (or 2 years with a relevant degree)
- Expert level: Requires training plus a minimum of 7 years’ experience (or 4 years with a relevant degree)
What is the duration of the course?
The course is delivered over five days. It includesstructured learning across four days, followed by an exam on day 5 (or withinthree days of course completion via Certbay).

How long is the certification valid?
The certification is valid for four years, in line with theTÜV SÜD certification contract
Is there an exam as part of the course?
Yes, the course includes a 1-hour exam which is taken on day5 or within three days after the course via Certbay.For the Expert and Professional course, Day 5 will include acase study as well as the final examination.
Is the course practical or theoretical?
The course is designed to be highly practical. It combinestheory with real-world examples, case studies, and hands-on exercises to helpyou apply what you learn directly to your own machinery and complianceresponsibilities.

Ian has worked mainly as a Health and Safety Manager for approximately 25 years in a variety of industries including oil and gas, automotive, warehousing, and distribution along with a mix of manufacturing facilities.
He qualified as a Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE®) and has subsequently brought companies into full compliance with the Provision of Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER).
Ian started working for TÜV SÜD in September 2023 as a Technical Trainer, delivering machinery safety training courses to individuals and companies.
