Day 1 – National & International Regulations
Starting with the fundamentals, we focus on how the legal framework works in the EU. We look at why regulations exist, how safety is defined, and what “state of the art” means. Together, we work through roles and responsibilities, so you understand exactly where you fit and what is expected of you. Through case studies and a short workshop, we apply this to real scenarios such as machine modification and understand the requirements of the Machinery Regulation. Day 2 – Risk Assessment & Protective Devices (EN ISO 12100)
As the course progresses, we move into EN ISO 12100 and show you how to structure a risk assessment properly. You’ll learn about identifying hazards, assessing risk, and applying the 3-step method for risk reduction. From there, we look at protective devices in detail, including interlocks, emergency stops and non-contact systems, and explain what works in practice and where common mistakes happen. You will also complete a hands-on exercise to turn a hazard into a justified safety concept.

Day 3 – Electrical & Fluid Power Systems
We then build on this by focusing on real equipment. We walk through electrical safety requirements using EN 60204-1 and explain what must be considered during design, testing and acceptance. Alongside this, we cover fluid and hydraulic power systems using applicable standards and highlight key risks such as stored energy and unexpected start-up. Using practical examples, we show you how to identify issues and apply suitable controls.

Day 4 – Functional Safety (EN ISO 13849 & EN IEC 62061)
As we move into the later stages of the course, we bring everything together with functional safety. We guide you through how to derive safety functions from your risk assessment and structure them using EN ISO 13849 and EN IEC 62061. We explain performance levels, basic system design, and validation in a straightforward way, supported by examples and exercises so you can see how it works in real projects.

There are no strict academic prerequisites to attend the course. However, you should ideally have a basic understanding of machinery safety, engineering principles, or relevant industry experience.

If you are applying for certification:

• Technician level: Completion of at least 32 hours of relevant training is required
• Professional level: Requires training plus a minimum of 5 years’ experience (or 2 years with a relevant degree)
• Expert level: Requires training plus a minimum of 7 years’ experience (or 4 years with a relevant degree)

What is the duration of the course?

The course is delivered over five days. It includes structured learning across four days, followed by an exam on day 5 (or within three days of course completion via Certbay).

Is there an exam as part of the course?

Yes, the course includes a 1-hour exam which is taken on day 5 or within three days after the course via Certbay. For the Expert and Professional course, Day 5 will include a case study as well as the final examination.
