Helping you to understand the complex requirements for UKCA marking
UKCA marking (UK Conformity Assessed marking) is the UK product marking requirement that will be needed for products being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), substituting the EU requirements for CE Marking (CE marking will continue to be accepted in Northern Ireland). UKCA marking can be used to replace the CE Marking requirements at the end of the European Union exit transition period, which is scheduled to occur at 23:00 on 31st December 2020.
If you are placing manufactured goods on the market in Great Britain, the introduction of the new UKCA mark presents the challenge of ensuring compliance with a new conformity assessment mark. If you are placing manufactured goods on the Norther Ireland market, there are separate requirements to consider.
The UKCA marking will apply to most goods currently subject to CE marking and although the technical requirements you must meet will be largely the same as they are now, there is still a lot of preparation required.
While the UKCA mark can be applied from 1st January 2021, a transition period has been established allowing the CE mark to still be accepted in the UK until 1st January 2022. However, in some cases you will need to apply the new UKCA marking to goods being sold in Great Britain immediately from 1st January 2021, so it is vital to ensure your business is prepared for the new UKCA mark.
For people wishing to place their products on the GB and/or NI market after 31st December 2020 there are still a lot of unanswered questions and misleading information.
