CErtification mark for optical fibre communication systems

Scope:

The certification mark applies to Test program of Optical Fibre Communication Systems: Safety and Performance Test on Fibre Optic Interconnecting Devices and Passive Components with voluntary product testing with higher sealing and optical performance.

Basis of certification (test requirements):

Test basis is outlined in PPP 51106A. After successful testing and certification of the product, the voluntary certification mark of the independent testing and inspection organisation TÜV SÜD is awarded. The use of the TÜV SÜD certification mark presupposes a repeated annual visit to the manufacturing facilities.

key statements of the certification mark:

  • IEC 61753 Cat A, S, G

IEC 61753 Cat A, S, G are service environment categories which consider the installation requirement in outdoor areas (aerial, ground, subterranean), defined in IEC 61753-1, and tested by IEC 61753 series, respectively by various test methods in IEC 61300-2 series.

  • High Performance

Based on the optical and sealing acceptance criteria defined in IEC 61753, higher performance test conditions are additionally evaluated on its water immersion durability, connector tensile strength on cable and humidity resistance.

    • Water Resistance

Sealing performance is tested by IEC 61300-3-38 or IEC 61300-3-23 respectively, based on types of enclosure pressure, and tested additionally with higher water immersion durability level up to IP68 under 5m for 7 days by IEC 60529.

    • Connector Tensile Strength

Tensile Strength on connector terminated patchcord cable assemblies is tested by IEC 61300-2-50 with at least 300N static loads, up to max 800N.

    • Damp Heat Test

Humidity Resistance is tested by IEC 61300-2-19 with higher requirement up to 75°C 95%RH 1000hr.

    • Impact Strength

Impact Strength (IK) Rating is degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts in accordance with IEC 62262. Ratings are ranged from IK01 to IK10, and enclosure of product is tested in higher ratings IK09 or IK10 and can withstand against 10 or 20 joules impact, which is equivalent to impact of 5kg mass dropped from 200 or 400 mm above impacted surface.

  • Low Attenuation

Attenuation Grade are defined in IEC 61753, and tested by IEC 61300-3-34 or IEC 61300-3-45 based on fiber modes. Grade A are not defined so far, and Grade B is the lowest defined attenuation rating.

  • Hardened Connector (Fusion Free)

Hardened Fibre Optic Connector is water and dust tight connector, typically used as connection in outside plant, which can be used as factory-terminated connectors to allow fusion free cable deployment, and is tested by relevant requirement in IEC 61753, with various test methods in IEC 61300-2 series correspondingly.

  • Insertion Loss: IL ≤ 0.35dB

Insertion Loss on randomly mated single/multi mode connectors was estimated by IEC 61300-3-34 and IEC61300-3-45 respectively for their expected average optical attenuation performance defined by IEC 61753-1.

  • Type Tested

The voluntary certification mark with the statement "Type tested" is issued for products and components. The certification mark demonstrates that the product/component was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements. The certification criteria vary depending on the products in question.

  • Production Monitored
Periodic surveillance of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification which includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.

As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product check.

In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, the certificate will be withdrawn and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
