pROJECT SUMMARY

S2S1Sea2see, in collaboration with its Sea2See Foundation, is transforming the plastic waste from the Atlantic coastal environment and Lake Volta, Ghana, into high-quality products while combating plastic pollution and supporting the local community. By collecting, sorting, cleaning, and baling abandoned fishing nets from approximately 20 coastal locations, Sea2See contributes to a cleaner marine environment. The recycled materials are then used to produce products like eyewear, footwear, and automotive components. TÜV SÜD  verified Sea2See’s collection and recycling methodology in line with the Plastic Pollution Reduction Standard, which will enable them to earn plastic credits that would fund the expansion of their operations and create additional positive environmental and social impacts.

Business Challenge

Atlantic coasts, lake Volta and local rivers are heavily polluted by abandoned fishing nets, a significant source of plastic waste. Sea2See needed a robust, verified system to prove that their collection and recycling process was authentic and met global standards. They sought to earn plastic credits to fund the expansion of their operations, enhance local job creation, and support a circular economy, all while maintaining transparency and ensuring the credibility of their efforts.

solution

TÜV SÜD, as an accredited Validation and Verification Body for the Plastic Credit Exchange (PCX), verified Sea2See’s plastic collection, sorting, cleaning, and recycling processes. TÜV SÜD verified that Sea2See’s operations aligned with the Plastic Pollution Reduction Standards (PPRS) of PCX, making their project eligible to generate plastic credits. Once verified , Sea2See can trade these credits on the PCX platform through their registry, allowing companies to offset their plastic footprint while generating revenue to continue scaling Sea2See’s impact.

Business benefit

With TÜV SÜD’s verification and acceptance by PPRS, Sea2See will be able to successfully register their project for plastic credits, allowing them to trade these credits once issued. The revenue generated from the future sale of these credits is expected to support the local expansion of collection activities, purchase of motorized boats to reach remote areas of Lake Volta, and enable the hiring of additional community members. Furthermore, with validation of their recycling processes, Sea2See will be able to promote their brand as a plastic-neutral company, attracting more partners and customers committed to sustainability.

Fracnois van de Abeele

Our selection of TÜV SÜD was based on their credibility, extensive technical expertise, and longstanding experience in environmental certification. We were very happy to work closely with their team during site visits to West Africa - Ghana, where they verified our impact on the ground, and to Italy, where they audited our partner recycling facility; Domo Chemicals. As the Sea2see Foundation continues to expand its operations across new regions, TÜV SÜD will remain our key partner, ensuring our impact remains consistently validated to the highest standards.
