TÜV SÜD helps Dice Consulting increase BIM knowledge and workflow efficiency

TÜV SÜD provided Dice Consulting, a civil and structural engineering consultancy, with BIM/Digital Assessment, Advisory and Training solutions to enable the team to work to current BIM guidelines. This will help with cost savings on projects, allow easier and smoother collaboration on projects, and enable them to work on larger projects.

Dice Consulting is a multi-disciplinary civil and structural engineering consultancy operating nationally from Nottingham. The team works with national clients across the UK to deliver sustainable and effective engineering designs and planning application support for a range of sectors.

As Dice is a young company, having been founded only 4 years ago, they didn’t have any official BIM procedures in place. Jack Simmons joined Dice in 2021 as BIM Lead and was tasked with the requirement to progress the company towards getting accredited to ISO 19650. However, all of the employees at Dice had different levels of BIM experience and knowledge, so it was important to assess everyone’s current skills before working towards getting everyone up to speed with current guidelines.

One of the main reasons Dice chose TÜV SÜD to help them do this is because they believed they would benefit from working with, and getting support from, a company with lots of BIM experience. Dave Peacock, TÜV SÜD’s Technical Director for BIM and Digital Services, was a key factor within this decision. Jack explained, “I know Dave well and am aware that he is very knowledgeable within the BIM sector. His BIM accolades speak for themselves, so I was very confident in working alongside him.”

TÜV SÜD’s approach with Dice Consulting

Step 1: Assess Organisational Processes / Information Requirements – Face-to-face in Dice Office

Following an informal conversation about TÜV SÜD’s BIM services, Dave visited the Dice Consulting office in Nottingham to review their current management system, company processes and projects. He assessed these against the requirements of ISO 19650 – Global BIM Standard (next evolution of BS-PAS1192/BIM Level 2). This was followed up by a detailed practical report providing outcomes and proposed route to successful BIM implementation, outlining where they could make improvements to the current processes.

Step 2: Staff Assessment – Remote BIM assessment

The Dice team were then asked to complete an online BIM assessment to enable TÜV SÜD to evaluate the current knowledge of the technical team, which would allow training to be specifically designed for the company. The results were collated into a report giving recommendations and highlighting gaps in knowledge, which then fed into the BIM/ISO19650 training session. This proved to be extremely valuable to Dice, as they were immediately able to start putting procedures and plans in place off the back of this.

Step 3: BIM/ISO 19650 Training Course – Face-to-face course for the entire Dice team

TÜV SÜD prepared and delivered a bespoke training course that covered the overarching terms and processes related to BIM and Digital Engineering. It included an overview of the documentation required for an ISO 19650 workflow, such as an Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) and BIM Execution Plan (BEP).

Step 4: ISO 19650 Documentation Templates

At TÜV SÜD’, we are able to provide compliant templates for many of the documents required as part of the ISO 19650 process. For example, we provided a TIDP (Task Information Delivery Plan) template during our initial work with Dice Consulting.

“Assisting Dice Consulting with the first step of their journey towards ISO 19650 was an important step and I’m delighted that we were able to support them. This is hopefully just the first stage of the relationship with Dice, and we are looking at how we can provide additional assistance on aspects such as virtual reality, creation of a BIM Cave or coordination area, supporting with 3D modelling efficiency tools, plus additional training and assistance with BIM / ISO 19650 accreditation.”

Business benefits

The guidance and training Dice Consulting received from TÜV SÜD will allow them to work to current BIM guidelines. It will help with cost savings on projects, allow easier and smoother collaboration on projects, and enable them to work on larger projects.

Jack Simmons, BIM Lead and Senior Revit Technician, Dice Consulting said:

“I would highly recommend Dave Peacock and TÜV SÜD to any company looking to improve their internal BIM processes. It was a very professional service and the training will help us work more efficiently as a business. If we have new starters who require training or more BIM requirements as a company, then TÜV SÜD will be my first port of call.”

At TÜV SÜD, we understand that all projects are bespoke, and each client has their own specific requirements. We offer support and advice to implement best practices and will tailor our offerings to suit your individual needs.
