Scott Logan, an Electrical Engineer in the BESS / Renewables team at Aggreko, shares how he benefited from attending a bespoke training course on the EU Battery Regulation.

Aggreko is a global leader in engineered energy and temperature solutions. We design, deploy and optimise the flexible energy and temperature solutions that are essential to our customers’ operations. Where they are needed. For as long as they are needed.

As an Electrical Engineer in the BESS / Renewables team at Aggreko, I utilise my electrical engineering expertise to help evaluate and deliver safe, efficient Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) that support our transition to cleaner, smarter energy solutions.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES: Staying Ahead of EU Battery Regulation Compliance and Sustainability Requirements

Attending TÜV SÜD’s bespoke EU Battery Regulation course was essential for Aggreko to stay ahead of evolving compliance and sustainability requirements under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. I gained a deep understanding of battery lifecycle obligations, including design, labelling, carbon footprint, recycled content, and end-of-life management. It also covered due diligence for raw materials and the upcoming battery passport system, which are critical for traceability and sustainability in our Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects. It also covered due diligence for raw materials and the upcoming battery passport system, which are critical for traceability and sustainability in our Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) projects.

Our goal was to gain practical insights and confidence in integrating these requirements into our processes, ensuring our products meet regulatory standards while supporting Aggreko’s commitment to safety and sustainability. We wanted actionable knowledge to create a roadmap for compliance and embed circular economy principles into our energy solutions for customers worldwide.

IMPACT / VALUE ADDED: Integrating regulatory requirements into product development

Our efforts in attending the TÜV SÜD EU Battery Regulation course directly support Aggreko’s ability to remain compliant with Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. As we are a unique industry in the eyes of the Regulations, this training was critical to equip us with the knowledge to integrate regulatory requirements into product development, ensuring our BESS fleet meet sustainability and traceability standards. By understanding what is required of Aggreko allows us to:

  • streamline processes
  • reduce compliance risks
  • avoid costly redesigns or penalties

These insights will enable us to accelerate timelines, improve operational efficiency, and maintain customer confidence in our solutions.

TÜV SÜD’s perspective

Bespoke training is critical for organisations like Aggreko, where the EU Battery Regulation applies in unique ways. By ensuring we had a good understanding of Aggreko’s business and challenges, we were able to tailor the EU Battery Regulation requirements to their products and processes. This enabled us to move beyond theory in the training and focus on what they actually need to do to embed compliance, reduce risk, and support sustainable product development whilst avoiding costly redesigns.
