World Standards Day 2023 – SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being

12 October 2023

On the occasion of World Standards Day on 14 October 2023, TÜV SÜD highlights international standards as being critical for people’s good health and well-being. World Standards Day is a joint initiative by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). With 26,000-plus employees in roughly 50 countries, TÜV SÜD is among the leading suppliers of testing, inspection and certification (TIC) services.

“Shared vision for a better world – incorporating SDG 3”

ts-pr-dr-johannes-bussmannIn the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and its persistent impacts on healthcare all over the world, the theme of the 2023 World Standards Day is as topical as ever. “Protecting people is one of the founding values of TÜV SÜD and has accompanied us since 1866”, says Dr Johannes Bussmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of TÜV SÜD AG. “To live up to this value, we follow the United Nations’ Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP) and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as internationally recognised standards.” This commitment is also reflected by the services and solutions that TÜV SÜD delivers for a wide range of sectors and industries.

Internationally in high demand – TÜV SÜD’s health-sector and medtech expertise

Providing testing, inspection and certification (TIC) services for the medical and health sector, TÜV SÜD helps to make medical devices available and accessible at international level. TÜV SÜD is one of the world’s leading Notified Bodies for the testing, inspection and certification (TIC) of medical devices, with an interdisciplinary network of dedicated experts in areas including engineering, medicine and biochemistry. For over 30 years, TÜV SÜD’s experts have been committed to supporting manufacturers and providers with the approval and placing on the market of their medical devices. TÜV SÜD’s services include testing of ergonomics, electrical, mechanical and functional safety as well as various software tests provided in our laboratories. These tests confirm that medical electrical equipment, systems and other devices correspond to all relevant standards and regulations. The company has hundreds of experts all over the world working in areas including in-vitro diagnostics (IVDs), orthopaedic medical devices, sterilisation methods, innovative medical devices, radiation protection in medicine and research, safety controls and biocompatibility of medical devices. Monitoring and ensuring food safety across borders

TÜV SÜD also offers comprehensive services for the food industry in areas such as food safety, quality and hygiene. These factors are fundamental for the marketability of food products and must be controlled, monitored and ensured throughout the value chain. This is because production, processing and placing on the market of food are subject to strict legal regulations, and standard owners such as IFS, BRC and ISO as well as customers also have high expectations when it comes to food safety, quality management and hygiene. At the same time, the situation is made even more complex by the rise in outsourcing of activities and the division of labour among numerous, sometimes even global operators along the value chain. Compliance with due diligence obligations and conformity of all processes present major challenges for food companies. TÜV SÜD is supporting these companies by offering comprehensive services including laboratory analyses, audits, tests, certification and training in the relevant subjects to ensure smooth supply chains and safety in food production. Occupational health and safety in companies is growing increasingly important

TÜV SÜD also provides management system certification, assisting companies and organisations in ensuring conformity with legal and normative requirements, optimising their processes and continually improving their performance. This also applies, for example, to audits and certifications in accordance with the ISO 45001 international standard that defines the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system. In an employee market, and given the presence of increasing regulatory requirements such as those established by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), this aspect will continue to become increasingly significant in the future. An overview of TÜV SÜD’s services in the field of occupational health and safety is available at https://www.tuvsud.com/en/services/auditing-and-system-certification/iso-45001.

Regulations and standards inspire trust in sustainable technologies

International standards foster technological, economic and social developments. They contribute to harmonising product and service specifications, improve efficiency in industry, remove global trade barriers and, last but not least, enhance consumer safety. International standards are developed and distributed in a process of exchange and consensus among experts under the lead of standard-setting organisations such as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Third-party testing and inspection by recognised and competent TIC service providers such as TÜV SÜD ensure compliance with the requirements, thereby creating a basis of trust for joint action.
