Regulation concerning ecodesign requirements relating to the energy consumption of electrical and electronic appliances

Regulatory context:

The EU has published Regulation (EU) 2023/826 on ecodesign requirements for off-mode, standby and standby-on-grid energy consumption of electrical household and office equipment and electronic, on 04/18/2023.

This regulation is part of the framework for setting ecodesign requirements applicable to energy-related products of DIRECTIVE 2009/125/EC of the European Parliament

It repeals Regulation (EC) No 1275/2008 and Regulation (EC) No 107/2009 concerning respectively the ecodesign requirements relating to electricity consumption in standby mode and in off mode of electrical household and office equipment and electronic devices and simple digital decoders from May 9, 2025.

Main changes:

• Conformity assessment now applies to Directive 2009/125/EC

• The scope is expanded to include:

• Motorized modular furniture (desk, beds, etc.)

• Motorized construction elements (shutters, pergolas, garage door, windows, curtains, etc.)

• Products delivered without external power supply are included

• No more exclusion of products powered by "external low voltage power supplies"

• Consumption in "OFF" mode must not exceed 0.3W, from 2027-05-09

• “Sleep” mode for products with information or status display must not exceed 0.8W

• Network standby for “HiNA” products must not exceed 7.0W as of 2027-05-09

• Standby or off power management period should not exceed 20 min. (except for coffee machines)

It should be noted that a proposal for a European regulation concerning Ecodesign was released in March 2022. It will repeal Regulation (EC) No 107/2009 and will concern all products marketed in Europe.
