EURAMET's European Metrology Network for Energy Gases Delivers Successful Workshop

On 21 and 22 March 2023, EURAMET's European Metrology Network (EMN) for Energy Gases held its second stakeholder workshop on 'Metrology for Energy Gases' in Lisbon at IPQ, the Portuguese National Metrology Institute.

The event, which was jointly organised by TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory and IPQ, was aimed at all stakeholders involved in the production, transportation and use of energy gases. The hybrid event was very well attended by a broad range of stakeholders. Over 100 people attended from a wide range of European organisations including producers, distributers, equipment manufacturers, research institutes, trade associations and government bodies.

The workshop was split into two sessions:

Day one

Policy makers discussed the latest EU policy and legislation designed to address the challenges related to decarbonisation. Industry leaders, such as Hydrogen Europe, the Carbon Capture and Storage Association and a senior policy maker from the UK government gave their perspective on the unique metrological needs that currently hinder the implementation of greener fuels in industrial applications. A member from EURAMET’s Board of Directors gave updates on European policy in relation to energy gases and important EU initiatives, such as the European Partnership on Metrology and its support towards addressing current metrological issues.

Day two

Technical presentations from leading researchers highlighting the latest measurement solutions and outcomes from joint projects from European National Measurement Institutes in key technical areas including flow metering, gas quality assurance, sampling and storage.

The event was a great success and highlighted the benefits of European cross border cooperation to address the challenges of the transition to cleaner forms of energy gases and the importance of accurate measurement and development of suitable industry standards to support fair trade. It also showed that the EMN for Energy Gases has become an important focal point for bridging the gap between end-user communities and acting as a central nucleus for measurement science activities.
